This Opportunity
WSP is currently initiating a search for a Lead Industrial Hygienist for our Richmond, VA office. The following locations will also be considered: Herndon or Virginia Beach, VA . The position will provide technical support on a variety of industrial hygiene (IH) and Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) projects, primarily asbestos, lead, and mold investigation planning, fieldwork participation and sampling, reporting, and client communication. The applicant will be required to have a current Virginia Asbestos Inspector's License with the ability to obtain reciprocity in other states.
This position requires periodic travel within Virginia and occasionally elsewhere in the United States for work at client sites. This individual should expect to spend approximately 50-75% of their work time at client sites; each individual trip generally lasts 1 to 5 days. This individual should be able to conduct assessments at industrial facilities, including climbing ladders, walking upstairs, and carrying field equipment.

Your Impact
Take the lead in asbestos, lead, and mold field investigations, including scoping, planning, assembling and leading a field team, participating in the investigation/sampling program, analyzing data, writing reports, and communicating with the WSP project team and the client.
Preferred ability to also conduct IH-related field assignments such as performing industrial hygiene monitoring, noise assessments, hazardous materials surveying and abatement monitoring, mold inspections and remediation monitoring, indoor air quality assessments, chemical inventory assessments, ergonomics assessments, job hazard assessments, and similar assignments.
Assist senior staff in conducting EHS audits and EHS program development.
Collect and document field data and observations in a clear and organized manner utilizing appropriate personal protective equipment and workspace monitoring equipment.
Assist in the collection of environmental samples (typically building and construction related materials).
Analyze, evaluate, and interpret field and analytical data obtained during field investigations.
Evaluate findings, make recommendations, and prepare written and verbal reports. Prepare data and visualizations such as tables, charts, accurate reports, and illustrations.
Write technical reports summarizing research with findings and conclusions, generating complete, accurate, and concise documentation using electronic systems, field/work site notes, and software.
Synthesize and summarize large amounts of information contained in regulatory files, environmental permits, and other environmental documentation.
Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Who You Are
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Public Health, Ecology, Industrial Hygiene, or Safety Engineering.
5 to 7 years of experience working as an Industrial Hygienist.
A minimum of 5 years of experience assisting with the implementation of asbestos inspection and abatement programs.
Proficiency with IH sampling techniques and equipment.
Highly familiar with relevant occupational health and safety laws, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
Possess a current Virginia Asbestos Inspector's License with the ability to obtain reciprocity in other states.
Working knowledge of U.S. environmental laws and regulations, including but not limited to United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) National Emissions Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP) and Virginia Department of Labor and Industry (DOLI) Asbestos regulations.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to a scientific and non-scientific audience.
Capable self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives.
Must be able to pass a HAZWOPER physical and be medically able to wear a tight-fitting respirator.
Participation in an OSHA-mandated medical surveillance program will be required, and safety training will be provided before being assigned to work on these sites
Applicants must be able to work in locations that feature the rough terrain typical of construction sites and to enter and work within facilities that include limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of industrial facilities.
Must have strong analytical skills and be able to solve problems independently, using knowledge gained from increasing experience.
Self-sufficient, self-motivated and ability to work under pressure of deadlines.
Valid US driver's license.
Ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, follow instruction, work independently, and comply with company policies.
Proficiency with business writing, office automation and communication software, technology, and tools.
Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP's health, safety, and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
Preferred Qualifications:
OSHA 40-Hour HAZWOPER Training, DOT Training, CPR and First Aid Training, and other related environmental certifications.
Experience interpreting and ensure environmental compliance with federal and state regulations as listed above.
