As part of the Corporate Finance Strategy team, independently play a critical role in bridging the technical expertise of data engineers and data scientists with the operational expertise of business support, marketing, supply chain, manufacturing and risk management and also performing complex accounting functions which support unit or corporate decision making on highly complex or broad business issues.

JOB DUTIES:

This is a part time position

Incumbent will help ensure that deep insights generated through sophisticated analytics translate into impact across the organization. Incumbent will provide expertise on complex business, financial or managerial issues within a business unit or corporate environment. Additionally, this position will/must:

  • draw on their domain knowledge to help business leaders identify and prioritize their business problems to create highest value when solved

  • tap into working knowledge of data, analytics and Artificial intelligence to convey business requirements to data scientists who will help create models and solutions.

  • ensure that the solution produces insights, help interpret the solution to the business and help them execute and drive adoption.

  • have the ability to analyze and understand impact and have a broader perspective on specific accounting issues. This requires a comprehensive understanding of Caterpillar's business accounting issues and fullsupport of the unit leadership team.

  • act as a teacher on accounting issues to staff accountants as well as non-accountants

  • resolve issues independently

  • lead and/or direct teams within or outside of discipline addressing complex problems

  • take full responsibility for outcomes

Business Translators are knowledgeable on a variety of accounting functions but generally have specialized areas of responsibility at this level. Incumbent has the ability to accomplish complex and/or technical analysis, but generally utilizes data gathered by others to render an accounting opinion or business decision. Incumbent will provide advice/recommendations to business unit managers and leaders often working on tactical and strategic business issues.

Possible specific areas of responsibility could include but are not limited to:

  • internal management accounting, including profit center, service center, distribution services, strategic business, integrated manufacturing, and component business unit reporting

  • coordination of purchased services, transfer prices, and accountable target costs

  • estimating various forecast and budget scenarios as needed based on changing business conditions

  • financial accounting including consolidation, analysis and communication of division or multiple business units results / explanations

  • presentation and explanation of results to management

  • communication of results to corporate offices

  • accounting user representative for financial systems

  • Incumbent must demonstrate specific accounting knowledge and independently handle accounting issues. Accounting tasks can be varied in areas such as:

  • providing financial guidance on cross-functional or business unit product teams

  • developing methodology and providing education to accounting and non-accounting staffs and cross-functional teams

  • communicating / consulting to broader (worldwide) audience on financial accounting issues

  • redesigning and implementing financial systems

  • drive behavior (ability to influence management directions) in accordance with financial targets and business unit / division / enterprise strategy

BACKGROUND/EXPERIENCE:

In the U.S., position requires a 4-year degree, preferably in accounting plus proven record of success at entry or lower levels. Non-accounting degree requires minimum of 18 hours of college level accounting or approved Accounting certification. Outside the U.S., international equivalent of education and/or certification are typically required. All approved certifications can be found on Finance Services Division Accounting Certification website. Must demonstrate high levels of initiative, leadership, good judgment, the ability to communicate effectively, a broad understanding of accounting business processes, process improvement, and have a comprehensive knowledge of Caterpillar business, products, suppliers and customers. 6-8 years of accounting experience is recommended.
