The Opportunity
We are seeking a dedicated Senior Trial Attorney (BI/UM) for our Irvine, CA staff counsel law office.
As a dedicated Senior Trial Attorney, you will provide legal representation to USAA members, insured clients, and USAA entities in all phases of civil litigation and legal proceedings pertaining to covered losses.
This position will offer a flexible work environment where most of your time will be working from your home office. You are expected to travel to attend trial, hearings, depositions, or other case related proceedings as needed. Relocation assistance is not available for this position.
What you'll do:
Defends assigned insurance defense cases of moderate to high exposure that involve complex liability, medical, and legal issues.
Handles cases through arbitration, trial, and possible appeal to include cases over multiple jurisdictions.
Appears in court as required, including arbitrations, trials and mediations.
Provides legal advice, develops, and implements legal strategy and ongoing budget projections to Claims Litigation, and clients, as appropriate on assigned cases.
Prepares legal pleadings, motions, statements, memoranda, trial briefs and other legal documents on assigned cases.
Takes and defends depositions.
Conducts direct settlement negotiations with plaintiffs' attorneys.
Stays current on all relevant statutes, case law and trial-related technology. Attends courses as assigned to maintain appropriate skill sets for trial.
Provides training to support staff, P&C Claims and Claims Litigation regarding changes in law, litigation and/or and other processes.
Serves as a mentor and trainer to other attorneys and legal assistants.
Partners with other attorneys in trial preparation and during trial.
May serve as a point of escalation for other attorneys and assign cases as necessary.
Ensures risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled in accordance with risk and compliance policies and procedures.
What you have:
Bachelor's Degree from an accredited school.
Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school required.
8 years of experience practicing law handling personal injury or civil litigation or trial cases.
Licensed to practice law in the jurisdiction(s) served.
2 years of demonstrated experience handling complex litigation cases to include those involving multiple parties or multiple jurisdictions.
Experience practicing law in the court systems within the geographic area being served.
Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Tools.
Ability to perform online legal research.
Excellent communication and presentation skills.
What sets you apart:
Eight plus years handling insurance defense personal injury cases within a staff counsel setting in the state of California.
First chair jury trial experience, including verdicts, in California Courts
Experience preparing reports and memos for Claims including initial case analysis, discovery, deposition reports, trial reports, and strategy analysis.
US military experience with skills related to one of the following MOS's: Navy (Legalman (LN), Marines (4410, 4411, 4402, 4405), Army (27A), USAF (51JX / 5J0X1)

What we offer:
Compensation: USAA has an effective process for assessing market data and establishing ranges to ensure we remain competitive. You are paid within the salary range based on your experience and market data of the position. The actual salary for this role may vary by location. The salary range for this position is: $138,230 - $264,200 .
Employees may be eligible for pay incentives based on overall corporate and individual performance and at the discretion of the USAA Board of Directors.
