JOB SUMMARY:

This position is responsible for supporting Southern Company Research & Development in the areas of project controls, data analytics, and project reporting. This position will provide long-term growth and development opportunities for the individual to become a subject matter expert in R&D project controls.

JOB REQUIREMENTS & PREFERENCES:

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree is required. BA/BS degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or relevant technical discipline strongly preferred.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 3 years combined experience in a mix of the areas of project controls, data analytics, project scheduling and project reporting is preferred.

  • SQL experience is preferred.

  • Experience with data management techniques to access, integrate, analyze, and visualize data from multiple sources is preferred.

  • Industrial, construction, engineering or other comparable project-based work is preferred.

Knowledge:

  • Above average computer/software proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access, VBA and/or other relational database management systems

  • Working knowledge of business tools such as Microsoft Power BI, Tableau and Maximo is desirable.

  • Working knowledge of collaboration tools such as Confluence and JIRA is desirable.

  • Proficiency with scheduling, costing, and forecasting tools such as Microsoft Project is preferred.

  • Working knowledge of budget, financial, accounting and supply chain functions is desirable.

Skills:

  • Must have the ability to assemble and analyze data, draw meaningful conclusions, and prepare and present both detailed and summary level reports and visual exhibits for management that clearly communicate the meaning of the underlying information.

  • Self-starter that works proactively and takes ownership.

  • Good organizational and time management skills.

  • Excellent analytical and troubleshooting skills, with attention to detail.

  • Good communication skills, both verbal and written.

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks/assignments with competing priorities.

  • Ability to work in a team atmosphere, build relationships and influence stakeholders.

  • Ability to provide and accept feedback

  • Ability to quickly grasp business requirements.

  • Ability to embrace change and identify and implement process improvements, as needed.

  • Strong desire to acquire new skills and knowledge as needed to anticipate and meet the challenges of evolving job requirements.

  • Ability to mature into a role of minimal supervision.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Project Controls

  • Cost estimating for conceptual and implementation of EPC projects

  • Forecasting and tracking resource loaded schedule.

  • Participate in proposal preparation and budget estimate for new project opportunities.

  • Serve as interface between project stakeholders and project controls group.

Data Analytics

  • Utilize and develop tools to access, integrate, analyze, and visualize data from multiple sources.

  • Manage and modify SQL database to generate project and program level reporting.

Project Scheduling

  • Generate project schedules using WBS structure and ensure all project scope is included and reflected.

  • Provide accurate schedule and report updates.
