Job Description

  • GENERAL SUMMARY

  • The Exercise Specialist reports to designated supervisor/manager. Under the direction and supervision of a licensed physical therapist, physical therapist assistant or athletic trainer, assists with clinical treatment plans and programs. Ability to independently provide strength conditioning, exercise and nutrition instruction and training programs/services for individuals and/or community groups. Assigned hours within shift, starting time or days of work are subject to change based on departmental, organizational and community needs.

  • ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides fitness services under guidelines established by the medical directors of the sports medicine program.

  • Assures continued competency of professional performance, knowledge and skill evidenced by professional development and maintaining current knowledge related to all aspects of practice.

  • Assists physical therapists and physical therapist assistants with instructing patients in exercise programs and carrying out physical therapy treatment plans.

  • Independently provides individual and group personal training and sports performance exercise instruction to clients.

  • Expertly conducts an initial assessment of a client's training, capabilities and impairments in order to provide an appropriate exercise plan.

  • Educates the client/caretaker of the client on appropriate exercise and nutrition for the youth athlete.

  • Develops training and fitness plans appropriate for the age, maturity, developmental level and goals of each athlete.

  • Directly supervises each client to ensure proper technique.

  • Enforces rules of the fitness area.

  • Maintains equipment and cleanliness of area.

  • Markets the program to the community to build client base.

  • Develops and presents community education on sports medicine related topics.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS

  • Strength and Conditioning Specialist certification (CSCS) through the NSCA and Youth Fitness Specialist certification through the IYCA preferred.

  • CPR training required and/or must be obtained within 45 days of hire.

  • MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's Degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology or related field with knowledge of pediatric strength training recommendations and sports performance concepts required.

  • Knowledge and experience in the administration of a variety of assessment tools, exercise plans and equipment with previous experience in independently providing exercise instruction and nutrition education preferred.

  • Valid driver's license required for travel to various off-site locations.

  • WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Clinical patient care environment with minimal exposure to hazards such as excess noise, dust, or extremes in temperature. Frequent exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, medicinal preparations, body fluids and other conditions common to the healthcare environment. Moderate adverse working conditions due to the need to perform certain patient care activities.
