job Description

The Operations Training Manager leads System Operator and Power System Coordinator training activities for Southern Company including the Alabama, Georgia, and Mississippi Transmission Control Centers and the SCS Power Coordination Center (PCC). Responsibilities include developing transmission operators for NERC Certification and successful shift operations, providing the required Continuing Education Hours (CEH) to maintain NERC Certification, and continually enhancing training and drills in pursuit of operating excellence. The Operations Training Manager will also lead the training activities for the development and continued growth of Georgia Distribution Control Center operators. The Operations Training Manager will team with each control center manager and their staffs in the development, planning, administration, and delivery of training, coordinating formal and on-the-job training activities among their respective staffs and working to achieve consistency and efficiencies among the operating companies.

The Operations Training Manager will provide performance management for direct report employees: GPC Transmission Training Supervisor, APC Transmission Training Supervisor, and four PCC Trainers. The Training Manager is also responsible for budget management, compliance with all NERC Reliability Standards related to training, and setting the strategic direction for operator training, training materials, and training techniques.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide leadership and strategic direction for the entire Power Delivery operator training organization, evolving approaches to meet changing workforce needs

  • Work closely with Power Delivery Operations management at APC, GPC and MPC to ensure that their training needs are met

  • Work to gain consistency across all Power Delivery operator training functions

  • Provide performance management for all direct reports, currently consisting of 2 training supervisors and 4 trainers

  • Provide for performance management and professional/personal development for all employees in the organization. Provide timely input to supervisors on training progress of operators in training

  • Manage the development and delivery of training to operations personnel and provide leadership for all training related activities

  • Build and manage effective relationships with industry peers

  • Model and support our Safety Excellence and human performance initiatives

  • Lead and reinforce a culture that values diversity, equity, and inclusion

  • Lead and/or participate in the hiring process for new operators in the PCC

  • Participate at an industry level within NERC, SERC, and the NATF in shaping the future of system operator training, best practices, and standard requirements

  • Ensure all applicable compliance requirements are met for the training organization and all related training requirements. Maintain training records

  • Represent the PCC on system level committees as required

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Education Requirements:

  • A four-year college degree preferred

  • In lieu of a college degree, 6 years of power system operations experience is required

  • Engineering degree (from an ABET accredited institution) is a plus

Experience Requirements

  • Must have or be able to quickly acquire NERC Certified System Operator certification

  • Power delivery operations and/or generation operations experience is required

  • 4 years power delivery operations or generation operations experience preferred

  • Performance Management experience is strongly preferred

  • Training experience for power delivery operators or generation operators is a plus

  • Knowledgeable in all phases of the Systematic Approach to Training (SAT)

  • Knowledge of NERC Continuing Education Program requirements

  • Knowledge of power delivery operations and generation operations activities

  • Knowledge of NERC Reliability Standards
