WSP is currently initiating a search for a Rail Simulation Analyst for our San Francisco, CA office. This can also sit out of any mutually agreed WSP USA office.

The ideal candidate for this position is a person with a background and interest in technical operational analysis and who has demonstrated knowledge of railroad and rail transit operations, including at least an understanding of rail vehicle performance, train control/signal system concepts, rail infrastructure, and rail service planning. The rail operations analyses performed by the candidate will help inform rail network operating and capital decision making, as part of a comprehensive approach to delivering rail consulting services to clients across North America. Simulation modeling experience with Rail Traffic Controller (RTC) or another rail simulation software package is required. The incumbent will be performing simulations of rail networks using RTC, and leading teams of simulation analysts to accomplish operational analysis tasks.
This position will be a part of WSP's Transit and Rail Operations team, which provides a full range of rail operations and service planning and analysis services for light rail, heavy rail/rapid transit, commuter rail, intercity passenger rail, high-speed rail and freight rail. WSP's rail operations personnel have specialized and extensive experience in rail and transit operations and rail operations simulation.
The incumbent performs rail service planning and rail simulation modeling activities in partnership with a project team. He or she will leverage his or her technical knowledge of rail operations to assist in the evaluation of project designs and service plans. As a member of the team, he or she will contribute to successful project delivery across a diverse set of rail modes and clients.
Your Impact
Perform rail simulation modeling.
Perform independent technical reviews and conduct simulation and other technical analyses to support capital project delivery, future service plans, infrastructure planning, service outage planning, and any other project that requires the analysis of current and/or future rail operations.
Provide technical expertise and advice to project leadership on the subjects of rail operations and rail simulation modeling.
Perform professional transit and rail operations work and conduct research on the operational performance of rail networks, rail vehicles, and signal/train control systems.
Assist with development and scoping of projects.
Prepare and/or contribute to technical reports on rail operations analysis and provide presentations to clients.
Assist in proposal generation.
Coordinate technical aspects with client counterparts and teaming partners to ensure consistency with project scope and client expectations.
Comply with regulatory requirements pertaining to the data integrity, documentation, procedures, training, monitoring systems, and record compliance and retention.
Interact with regulatory agencies, subcontractors, and clients in a confident and professional manner.
Remain current in latest transit and rail operating techniques and practices.
Work collaboratively with engineers, planners, scientific professionals, and infrastructure authorities on Federal, State, regional, and locally funded improvement and development projects.
Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Who You Are
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Transportation Planning, Urban Planning, Environmental Planning, or a related field (or equivalent experience.)
12+ years of relevant post education experience in rail operations and prior transit and rail experience.
Experience with rail operations, including rail operating rules, and operating practices.
Experience with Rail Traffic Controller simulation software.
Knowledge of rail systems, train control systems/signals, vehicles and/or operations.
Proficiency in office productivity software (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Ability to coordinate with agency regulators and clients and understand requirements.
Effective interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
Highly capable self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
Ability to work independently and provide guidance, mentoring, and leadership to junior team or project members, with strict adherence to QA/QC.
Developed critical thinking and problem-solving skills required to apply technical knowledge to reach conclusions from testing results, data collation, statistical analysis and arriving at the most effective, economical, and logical solution.
Excellent written and oral communications skills.
Ability to work well in a team environment.
Ability to assertively direct others in the field such as subcontractors and others to consistently complete tasks safely and efficiently.
Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP's health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
Master's Degree in Engineering, Planning, Policy, Computer Science, or a related field.
Experience managing small to mid-size projects and leading rail operations tasks on larger projects.
Basic First Aid and Adult CPR training desired.

Expected Salary (all locations): $98,000-208,000
