GENERAL SUMMARY
Under direct departmental supervision, and following established policies, procedures and regulations, the ED - Paramedic assists with various technical procedures, and performs skills including but not limited to establishing IV access, phlebotomy, specimen collection, splint application, and transporting of patients. Hospital resource when Vascular Access Team is unavailable overnight. The ED - Paramedic has an active role in Medical Alerts for the Hospital and a code role in resuscitations and traumas in the Emergency Department. Responsible for providing assistance in routine patient care and medically related administrative support activities in the Emergency Department.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Performs patient care and clinical procedures appropriately under the direction of the RN.
Updates patient vital signs and reports abnormal vital signs to RN caring for the patient.
Provides training to new hires in various roles within the Emergency Department.
Performs phlebotomy, specialized skills, specimen collection and IV procedures as directed by the RN.
Documents and communicates pertinent information ensuring confidentiality of patient records.
Performs other duties and tasks as assigned.
LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS
Current EMT-Paramedic license required.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Maintains competency through on-the-job training and education.
Ability to interpret type and level of patient care ordered.
Provides a variety of clinical treatments.
Understands and follows instructions relating to basic patient care.
PALS and ACLS required, ITLS preferred.
CPR Training required and/or must be obtained within 45 days of hire.
Must provide record of a completed diploma (or equivalent) or academic transcript for those areas performing complexity testing.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Expected to work in a patient care environment with minimal exposure to environmental hazards such as, but not limited to, excessive noise, dust, or extremes in temperatures. Exposure to communicable diseases and moderately adverse working conditions due to the need to perform certain patient care activities can be expected.
