Caterpillar is seeking an Industrial Designer to support our Americas Distribution Services and Marketing (ADSM) Division. This position requires interfacing with all levels of engineering and product management in order to create and convey key Product Identity elements and lead compliance / brand infusion into final designs. Each project presents many design challenges forcing the designer to balance cost, manufacturability, customer use / expectation, market needs and brand promise execution. Industrial Designer creates future product concepts supporting New Product Introduction (NPI) for the Global Caterpillar Brand.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Developing
Highly refined concepts to final designs for New Product Introduction that embody Product Identity (brand infusion), Styling, and optimized User Experience
Concepts for Multi Generation Product Plans (future product / service - vision casting)
-Blue dot- product concepts (disruptive / innovative / novel) to guide future New Product Introduction
Final designs of new machines, cabs interiors, components or related products
Differentiated product / component designs the reinforce the Caterpillar brand
Manage and oversee budget and timelines across multiple projects
Consult directly to Product Mgrs., New Product Introduction Mgrs. Marketing Mgrs., Project Engineers, outside resources, Dealers, and End Users in order to understand project or product needs
Determine scope of project / deliverables /expectations /executables and NPI gateway schedule
Gather project information including current product and competitive product research
Leverage ID expectations, end user, CAT Brand DNA, Product Identity and Styling requirements
Define / advise input to functional specs / customer requirements documents
Facilitate / Lead -deep dive- brainstorm sessions
Deliver estimated quotes for product design services, product mockups, and inside / outside suppliers
Leverage ID expert product operators to understand the operation of machines to help make decisions as to operator needs, visibility requirements and help to understand cab to machine interface.
Retrieve appropriate 3D electronic data or photos as underlay for concept generation
Generate 2D / 3D product design concepts for current product revision, future products or exploratory purposes
Present 2D / 3D design concepts as hand sketches, electronic renderings or 3D models
Present design concepts to Product / Industrial Design teams in person or via web based meetings anywhere in world
Iterative concept generation to meet updated business, stakeholder and market needs,
Lead/Direct product teams by articulating / executing Product Identity standards
Defend concepts and lead product teams in understanding cost trades, end user needs and ultimate market / brand impact
Deliver updated 3D electronic models / sketches to various teams for interpretation and new 3D data construction
Consult with component suppliers as needed to resolve product design intent and manufacturing issues
Participate/advise in product reviews
Lead / Mentor Jr level designers on projects
Develop / Advise to develop consistent look and feel design elements with proper brand DNA
Advise Caterpillar Business Divisions as -Integrator- connecting product groups with others on Materials & Processes, consistency, suppliers etc.
Lead New Product Introduction team members / engineers in execution of design intent
Lead to Deep Dive / Blue Dot concept teams of multiple disciplines
Evaluate / review engineering concepts and advising to establish prime path design
Skills

Product Design and Development: Knowledge of product features; ability to design, build, and develop a new product, technology, or service from concept through to production.
Basic Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree or higher in Industrial Design
At least 7 years of Industrial Design experience,
Project management experience
Concept to production design experience
Engineering driven design experience
Must be able to travel up to 15% (including some International)
Top Candidates Will Also Have:
Working knowledge of earth moving products and ability to operate them
Passion for construction machines and the user experience.
Experience with end-to-end product development, solution concept generation, presentation and refinement
Deep knowledge of materials and processes
