Technical Services Mechanical Support
This position will primarily be located at the Energy Center in Birmingham, AL
WORK LOCATION & TRAVEL
This position will be based out of Birmingham, AL, however candidates living outside of the area may be considered with the expectation that they could successfully telework and be physically present in-office (The Energy Center) and/or field location on a routine (see below) and as-needed basis.
Hybrid work schedule (both in-office and telecommute); currently three (3) days in-office and two (2) days telecommute (subject to adjustment).
Travel will be approximately 25% consisting of up to two project sites per month, spending 2 to 3 days at the site as needed to perform site assessments.
Will require travel to project sites primarily within the traditional Southern Company footprint (Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi), but may include other locations in the continental US.
Some relocation assistance may be available if the successful candidate does not already live within a reasonable commute distance.
POSITION SUMMARY
In this position you will be responsible for technical oversite of design review, construction, and startup of new natural gas fired resources within Southern Company's retail operating footprint. This position will lead cross functional technical and design teams including but not limited to mechanical, electrical, I&C, civil and environmental SMEs along with SCS Construction and plant personnel.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
Ability to review design information and disseminate to appropriate SMEs and plant personnel for review.
Collect input from design review and lead collaborative discussions with OEMs and EPCs.
Indirect supervision of engineers/analysts as well as indirect supervision of associated and supporting functions/personnel.
Ability to plan, organize and supervise project activities in a team building environment.
Lead role in the negotiation, development, and/or management of contracts.
Development and implementation of appropriate solutions addressing project challenges through identification and response to all circumstances that affect the project deliverables.
These affects include changes to the project's performance or schedule encompassing the timeframe from project award through some defined period post commercial operation.
Coordinate SCS and plant personnel review and design deviations during construction and startup activities along with proper documentation.
Maintain an active presence on site during key phases of the project.
Preparation and presentation of project status and results to all levels of enterprise-wide management and peer groups.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution required.
Mechanical, Electrical or Chemical engineering discipline preferred.
Advanced degree is desirable.
Professional Engineer license preferred.
Experience:
Minimum of 5 years of experience working in a Power Plant, Paper Mill, Steel Mill, or similar industry is required.
Specific experience in any of the following areas would be strongly preferred: Simple/Combined Cycle Startup, heavy industrial construction, Power Generation Engineering design/startup, or Plant Engineering and Operations and Maintenance.
Project management experience and demonstrated success leading a cross-company, multi-function enterprise team through a large, complex project.
In-depth knowledge and demonstrated experience in the development, implementation and operation of power generation technologies highly desired.
Proven analytical skills and the ability to communicate complex topics verbally and in written form
Proficiency with standard analytical and business software such as Microsoft Office applications is required
Exhibited high proficiency in the development and delivery of information using PowerPoint and other visual messaging software.
