JOB SUMMARY: Design, implement and report actionable worldwide competitive intelligence for the Financial Products Division (FPD) related to the financial services industry. This includes collecting, analyzing, storing and communicating significant competitive information and insights with recommendations to all stakeholder groups within the company to assist them in making intelligent strategic decisions. Manage ad-hoc competitive intelligence projects, many of which require employing and working with external consultants, which are requested and budgeted for by internal company business units.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Responsibilities are more complex at this level but, may include any of the following duties:
1.Administer the competitive intelligence program for FPD while functioning as an acknowledged subject matter expert for both finance and services.
2.Ensures FPD competitive intelligence activities are conducted in compliance with Caterpillar Code of Conduct criteria.
3.Develops and maintains a global and regional intelligence network with 15 to 25 Local Process Owners to expedite the flow of strategic and operational competitive information. Defines processes and works with FPD Line Units and Caterpillar to analyze and provide insights and trends for captives go to market strategies blending finance and services.
4.Answers inquiries, including in-depth competitive intelligence research requests from worldwide FPD employees on a wide variety of business, industry and management topics. May perform detailed customer interviews and accesses the appropriate sources to fulfill the customer requirements for information content and format.
5.Consults with internal customers to gain an understanding of their business issues and needs and determines how competitive intelligence research can be applied to meet those needs using Decision Framework. Selects methodology needed to solve customer issues in a cost-effective and timely manner.
6.Conducts analysis, which includes writing the request for proposal, selecting the vendor, assigning the project, supervising vendor work and maintaining liaison with customers. Anticipates and manages the project to stay on schedule.
7.Provides training and consulting services to employees accessing the data and information resources provided by the CI process.
8.Identifies and evaluates current technologies and services related to the field of information collection, storage and delivery. Provides consultation to other departments related to the collection, storage and delivery of information.
9.Participates on cross-departmental project teams, including 6 Sigma by providing insight derived from secondary research.
10.Develops, maintains and provides group support for a customer transaction database that tracks customer usage for Marketing Support. Analyzes and reports usage to the manager for input into the annual business plan.
11.Provides input to CI internal customer survey and provides insight into the analysis of survey results.
12.Selects and evaluates current materials for purchase for the print and electronic collections and coordination of the classification and indexing of the new materials in accordance with accepted library standards.
13.Serves as departmental expert and trainer in Internet and intranet usage of intelligence data for internal customers worldwide.
14.Coordinates work assignments of other CI employees.
15.Participates in accomplishment of continuous improvement objectives for the department. Progress toward accomplishment of these is measured through maintenance of necessary measurements and analysis of associated data. Participates in the identification of problem areas and development of resolutions to address them.
16.Understands the Harassment policy of the company and is responsible for its application in all aspects of employment.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND KNOWLEDGE:
Thorough knowledge of and advanced ability to apply competitive intelligence research principles and techniques.
Advanced knowledge of and advanced ability to perform report-writing techniques, including use of Cognos.
Advanced ability to develop customer contacts and demonstrated ability to obtain information needed for CI research analysis projects.
Advanced ability to analyze and summarize CI research findings, provide insights and develop sound recommendations.
Advanced ability to provide an atmosphere of teamwork and cooperation with fellow employees to accomplish given tasks.
Advanced ability to motivate coworkers and others to achieve objectives.
Advanced ability to manage projects, meet project deadlines, manage conflicting priorities and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
Demonstrated ability to train others.
Moderate travel required (5% - 15% of working time).
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: A 4-year college or university degree and a minimum of 5 years exempt experience in marketing, market research and/or competitive intelligence is recommended. CI research project management is a plus. Previous experience must be progressively increasing in responsibility and accountability and demonstrate an ability to gain in knowledge, skills, and responsibility such that a level of full competency can be reached. Equivalent experience may be substituted for education.
