Automation Developer/Engineer - Substation Integration & Automation (SIA)

SCS Transmission Equipment & Standards, Substation Automation Department

This position will be located in Birmingham, AL or Forest Park, GA

JOB SUMMARY

This position reports to the Substation Integration and Automation (SIA) Manager located in Birmingham. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining critical applications used by SIA engineers for configuring transmission substations. This role involves collaboration within a small team environment to create responsive and user-friendly interfaces, ensuring efficient data handling, and system functionality. In addition, the candidate will support innovation through evaluation of commercially available automation, substation monitoring, and cyber security solutions.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Make Safety our number one priority using a -Safety First- mentality and leading by example

  • Write new software or create modifications to existing applications as necessary based on project requirements. Ensure schedule deadlines are met for all software development.

  • Partner with other members of SIA to ensure operability and defect free operation/expectations of tools are met

  • Install vendor software and distribute to test environments for quality control and user acceptance.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Education & Experience

  • 4-year Engineering degree preferred (ABET accredited)

  • Relevant SIA/P&C design/Field Services experience required

  • Agile development experience is preferred.

  • Experience with design of SIA systems is preferred

  • The following software skills are preferred and utilized in current developments:

    • Experience using relational databases and SQL

    • Experience integrating with 3rd party APIs / SDKs

    • Proven experience as a Full Stack .NET Developer

    • Experience in front-end development using WPF, MVVM architecture, and Prism Framework

    • Strong backend development skills using C#, Entity Framework Core, and .NET technologies

    • Experience developing and testing ASP.NET Web API controllers.

    • Proficient in using Git for version control and familiar with Git Flow workflow.

    • Experience with Azure DevOps for project management and CI/CD.

    • Demonstrated ability to oversee production deployment processes and troubleshoot deployment issues.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Strong communication skills including the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders at an appropriate level of detail.

  • Ability to build and maintain positive working relationships with internal and external partner

  • Ability to analyze problems and programming approaches to prevent rework and schedule slippage.

  • Ability to develop simple, elegant solutions to complex problems utilizing the following:

    • Proficient in C#, XAML, JSON and XML.

    • Proficient in WPF with MVVM.

    • Strong knowledge of .NET technologies, including .NET Core and .NET Framework.

    • Experience with SQL Server, Entity Framework

    • Familiarity with MS Test, Auto Mapper, Fluent Validations.

    • Familiarity with SEL Teams/Blue Frame automation tools

    • Excellent problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills

  • Experience with full life-cycle development and delivery of enterprise-class software solutions using the latest technologies.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

  • This position can require some travel - approximately 25% per year.

  • This will include some overnight travel and will be primarily within the Southern Company operating territory (AL, GA, MS)

  • If the selected candidate currently resides outside the area they must be willing to relocate at their own expense
