REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS/SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Reports to the Surgery Supervisor/Manager and does not have any direct reports.

POSITION SUMMARY

Functions as a member of the surgical team performing assigned duties of the technologist in the scrub role. Applies knowledge of concepts necessary for maintain integrity of the sterile field. Serves the following populations: infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric.

ACCOUNTABILITIES

  1. Demonstrates proficiency in proper scrub technique and the handling of instruments, supplies and equipment for the assigned cases following department policies and procedures and job description. Demonstrates age related competency in the scrub role for the following age populations: infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric.

  2. Utilizes preference lists, in-depth knowledge of anatomy and physiology, departmental policies and procedures and the patient's age-related needs in preparing for and carrying out case responsibilities. Shares responsibilities with the clinical nurse for keeping preference cards current.

3.Maintains integrity of the sterile field by utilizing aseptic techniques and observation of the surgical team. Promptly addresses any observed breaks in sterile technique.

  1. Collaborates with the circulating nurse to effect accurate sponge, instrument, and sharp counts as per departmental guideline.

  2. Checks daily schedule to maintain proper supply of instruments, set-ups, and supplies specific to patient's age and physician preferences. Assists other personnel with procedures.

  3. Participates in the process of orientation of new employees and students to the scrub role. Acts as a role model and resource person for staff and students.

  4. Maintains certification according to professional requirements and presents proof of certification to the Service Coordinator.

  5. Serves as a liaison between co-workers and other departments demonstrating good guest relations with physicians, patients, and other staff. Functions as a cooperative and supportive member of the surgery department staff.

  6. Maintains understanding of departmental goals and objectives and works with co-workers and management to obtain goals and objectives.

  7. Performs other duties as directed. Education: Must be high school graduate or equivalent. Must be a graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program or a Licensed Practical Nurse educational program.

Skills: Must be able to understand directions and be able to communicate and respond to inquiries; requires effective interpersonal skills. Must be able to input and retrieve information from computer.

License: Current, unencumbered Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) licensure from the state of employment if hiring into the LPN capacity

Certification: CPR required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Years of Experience: Prior experience in a surgical setting preferred.

Certification: Preferred Certification by the Association of Surgical Technologists (AST)., certification from NCCT.

  4. Complete weekly Activity Therapy treatment notes and treatment plans according to unit policy and procedure. Document patients' participation in Activity Therapy treatment on a daily basis and update treatment plan per unit policy.

  5. Develop, implement, and review activity programs for meeting the needs of patients. Organize a realistic, effective, efficient Therapeutic Activities schedule that meets the needs of patients in Psychiatry.

  6. Acquire and demonstrate knowledge of patient diagnosis, complications, precautions, and indications for treatment through communication with other team members and consultations of medical records.

  7. Give regular reports to team members, separately, and in team meeting verifying status of patient's progress, change in goals, problems, and status of participation in Therapeutic Activity treatment. Relay information regarding change in behaviors.

  8. Assist in arranging program coverage and ensure covering (replacement) staff is well informed of the treatment required for patients in the event of absence, planned illness, or vacation. Adjust activity schedule in response to fluctuations in unit needs, demands. Receive approval from Manager/Director/designee for program adjustments in the event of absence due to planned or unplanned illness or scheduled vacation of self and notify peers and nursing staff of approved program adjustments.

  9. Communicate and coordinate Therapeutic Activity programs with the PCS, Nursing Staff, Physicians, Managers and Director to promote patient participation and/or consistency in care.

Specialty Pharmacy Specific Duties: a. Works proficiently within pharmacy and specialty workflow software systems. b. Assisting pharmacist with patient refill reminder and documenting appropriate clinical information per diagnosis.

Education: High School Diploma or equivalent

License:

OHIO: Certified Pharmacy Technician registration or Pharmacy Intern License with Ohio Board of Pharmacy. May be hired with a Registered Pharmacy Technician with restrictions in duties and expectation of Certified License being obtained within 6 months of hire.

MICHIGAN: Licensed Pharmacy Technician or Pharmacy Intern License with Michigan Board of Pharmacy. May be hired with a Temporary Pharmacy Technician License (expires 1 year from receipt) with expectation of Pharmacy Technician license and/or technician certification being obtained within 6 months of hire.

Certification: Certified Pharmacy Technician (either PTCB or ExCPT (NHA) exam permitted)

POSITION SUMMARY

Performs all aspects of sterile processing functions to support the needs of the hospital.

ACCOUNTABILITIES

Decontaminates, inspects, and maintains reusable instruments to prepare items for high temperature washing, pasteurization, and/or sterilization. Participates in cost containment initiates by monitoring trash and linen for instruments as well as identifying instrument in need of repair. Prepares designated reusable supplies, instruments, etc., in the proper quantity and layout to meet the requirements of physician and medical/surgical needs with minimal errors. Wraps designated supplies according to technical specifications to ensure sterility during handling and/or through its shelf life. Ensures processed items meet technical standards and sterilization through the use of control procedures in the sterilization process. Performs biological and chemical monitoring in accordance with quality assurance standards. Operates washers, sterilizers, low temperature sterilizer, cart washer, sonic, and pasteurizer following the manufacturers' operational procedures. Responds to patient care requests for delivery of processed supplies and instruments. Acts as a core preceptor in orientation of processing technicians. Utilized as a resource for basic sterilization/processing problems. Cleans and tests patient care equipment between each patient use. Completes Bio-Medical service request forms for any malfunctioning equipment. Documents productivity by recording functions completed on daily work sheets. Inspects linens for tears, stains, etc. Sends damaged for repair or disposal according to departmental procedures. Processes linen, such as, sorting, folding, counting, stacking, packing, according to departmental policy. Label instruments clearly and correctly following departmental policy and procedures. Performs other duties as directed.

Education: High School Diploma or equivalent

Skills: Requires proficiency in technical procedures and to familiarity with a broad range of surgical instruments. Must be able to understand directions and be able to communicate and respond to inquiries. Must have excellent interpersonal skills. Must be able to input and retrieve information from a computer. Must be able to differentiate colors, and operate sterilizer, washer-sterilizer, pasteurizer, computer, etc.

Certification: Certification as a Central Service Technician
