This Opportunity

WSP is currently initiating a search for a Subsurface Utility Engineering Technician III - "Analyst" with the option to work out of one of our North Carolina offices to support our Southeast Region Geospatial / Surveying Team. The successful candidate will be part of a team conducting Subsurface Utility Engineering of all levels. In this role, you will have the opportunity to work with an exceptional management team, highly regarded in the market, and within a supportive and collaborative company culture.

This is an exceptional opportunity to join a robust and rapidly growing Geospatial team offering ongoing training/mentoring and promotional opportunities, as well as a stable backlog. Candidates with a BS degree in a relevant discipline and experience will be considered.

Your Impact

  • Lead SUE Field Crew in day-to-day operations, including but not limited to utility designating, vacuum excavation, and data collection

  • Assist with development and maintenance of site safety plans

  • Create a culture of safety observing and complying with all company and related safety rules

  • Mentor junior staff, training on utility location and vacuum excavation

  • Ensure assigned SUE field project tasks and data collection are quality, accurate, and thorough

  • Communicate with office staff on project progress, project needs, equipment needs, etc.

  • Engage in occasional contact with client personnel to schedule and coordinate project activities.

  • Occasionally work with utility owners to obtain needed as-built/schematic records

  • Complete assigned projects in the field, on schedule and under budget

  • Work with office crew to create an accurate and complete deliverable

  • Remain current in latest SUE/survey knowledge, techniques, and practices.

  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures

  • Assist project managers with estimates for project budgets.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Must have 4+ years of progressive experience in the SUE industry desired

  • High school diploma or GED

  • Ability to work independently, and as part of a diverse team

  • Analytical, detail oriented, goal driven, problem solver, self-lead

  • Possess excellent communication skills

  • Display proficiency with both EM and GPR locating equipment

  • Display proficiency in reading utility as-built/schematic records

  • Display working knowledge of survey equipment (conventional and GPS)

  • Ability to operate vacuum excavation equipment

  • Ability to traverse terrain, as project dictates, in all seasons

  • Ability to lift up to 100 lbs or work as a team to do so

  • Must have a valid driver's license with acceptable MVR

  • Be able to pass criminal background check and drug screening

  • Able to work occasional overtime as project timeline dictates

  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements

  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP's health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.

This Opportunity

WSP is searching for a Lead Consultant Civil Engineer for our Charlotte, North Carolina office to be part of our Civil Design service line that supports WSP's power, industrial, and municipal clientele across the southeast. The following locations will also be considered: Asheville, NC , and Greensboro, NC . The position relies heavily on an ability to interact with clients, team leadership skills, and technical knowledge. The successful candidate will have the ability to work on a breadth of civil projects ranging from erosion and sediment control plans, spill prevention, control, and countermeasure (SPCC) plans, hydraulics and hydrology design, civil grading, and landfill design and closure projects. As a civil engineer, the candidate will be responsible for execution of calculations, design options, reports, agency reviews, and construction drawings for civil design projects. The candidate will have a strong desire to interact with clients and foster long lasting relationships.

Your Impact

  • Manage and direct small to medium project design teams

  • Prepare scope of work and costing documents for proposals

  • Coordinate with other senior engineering staff, lead junior team members, project stakeholders and other disciplines to manage an organized approach to project execution

  • Perform professional civil engineering work including design of erosion and sediment control measures in compliance with state requirements, SPCC plans, site grading using AutoCAD Civil3D, hydraulic systems (closed and open conduits), hydrologic analyses, and stormwater management facilities.

  • Prepare permit applications and respond to agency (owner) comments in design

  • Prepare construction drawings and specifications to implement designs

  • Prepare client-ready reports and drawings

  • Evaluate design options and understand cost/benefit of solutions

  • Training and mentoring junior staff

  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint software

  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering

  • Professional Engineer registration in North Carolina, or ability to obtain within one year

  • 7-10 years of professional engineering experience

  • Valid state driver's license. Must successfully complete and pass WSP's Motor Vehicle screening

  • Must be willing to travel to project sites and business meetings, as required

  • Project management experience and team leadership skills

  • Proficient in Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Civil design software tools

  • Proficient with making technical computations and calculations involving the application of engineering principles, understanding plans and specifications and making factual comparisons to the appropriate regulations.

  • Produces the preparation and finalization of "client-ready" invoices in Oracle.

  • Under direction of project accountant, revises invoice and makes appropriate adjustments to project expenditures such as splits or transfers and perform Oracle maintenance to include bill rate adjustments.

The Senior Project Manager position will directly support the Senior Vice President, Program & Construction Management in growing the PMCM Practice in the Mid Atlantic, and will play lead roles in projects. This role will also support the ITS National Practice and the local Traffic Engineering practices in Maryland, Virginia and associated states, as well as the National P3 and Alternative Project Delivery Practice and specific projects. The position will be responsible for field inspection of telecommunications, ITS and tolling field devices for highway projects. The position requires an effective team leader who works cooperatively to deliver projects and programs on time and on-budget, meeting the quality standards per the technical specifications and in accordance with quality, safety and security procedures. The TSM&O Senior Consultant will be client and industry-facing and will build and maintain relationships with public and private sector clients, and teaming partners, and will represent the firm and the practice at industry events.
