Job Description

  • GENERAL SUMMARY

  • Reports to the Department Manager, Supervisor or Lead Clinical Lab Scientist and is responsible for following established policies, procedures, and regulations. Performs/assists with various clinical laboratory test procedures and ensures proper maintenance and operation of instrumentation.

  • ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Works with Manager, Supervisor or Lead Clinical Lab Scientist on a variety of laboratory projects.

  • Participates in PI, QA, and QC to ensure all regulatory requirements maintain an 'in compliance' status.

  • Functions in a charge or lead role as assigned for the days operations to ensure safe quality and efficient workflow, practices, staffing and operations.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS

  • Certification as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist/Medical Technologist in all disciplines by the Board of Registry of the American Society of Clinical Pathologist (ASCP).

  • MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's Degree in Clinical Laboratory Science or equivalent.

  • Six to twelve months of laboratory training/job experience necessary in order to become familiar with a variety of laboratory testing procedures.

  • Must be able to determine the appropriate course of action for abnormal, atypical or critical test results.

  • GENERAL SUMMARY

  • The Senior Pharmacy Technician works under the direct supervision of the pharmacist as stated by the Virginia Board of Pharmacy and reports to the Pharmacy Operations Supervisor. The technician assists the pharmacist and other health care professionals in the medication delivery system. In addition to the Pharmacy Technician I and Technician II job functions, the Senior Pharmacy Technician is responsible for preparation of chemotherapeutic agents, chemotherapy inventory, and technician and/or staff education.

  • ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Uses computer and relevant programs to access patient records to charge/credit patients for medications, and to verify patient's location.

  • Organizes and prioritizes phone calls and window traffic, and keeps the pharmacist informed.

  • Collects and organizes all pertinent information under the direction of the pharmacist.

  • Appropriately prepares medication orders, compounds stock solutions, and sorts products and doses using IV pharmacy workflow technology. Construct TPN compounder and utilize compounder to fill TPN and bulk fluid orders efficiently. Ensures equipment is clean, and maintained in working order.

  • Responsible for properly cleaning IV room laminar flow hoods in accordance with regulations and manufacturer guidelines (USP 797).

  • Restock IV clean room when supplies are low, and at the end of shift. Reviews stock for outdated medications.

  • Prepares and compounds chemotherapy and hazardous medications by using aseptic technique to ensure safe products for patients per USP 800 standards under the direct supervision of a pharmacist.

  • Responsible for properly cleaning Hematology/Oncology Clinic Pharmacy horizontal and vertical laminar flow hoods in accordance with USP 797 and USP 800, respectively.

  • Responsible for maintaining appropriate stock levels of supplies and chemotherapy medications in the Hematology/Oncology Clinic Pharmacy.

  • Serves as an approved technician preceptor by participating in orientation and training of new and existing employees and developing training material.

  • Identifies performance deficiencies of new employees and provides feedback/training in an effort to correct deficiencies.

  • ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs, assists and accountable for various clinical laboratory test procedures and ensures proper maintenance and operation of instrumentation.

  • Exercises professional judgment in the performance of laboratory procedures.

  • Provides patient care essential to laboratory procedures.

  • Recognizes patient conditions requiring immediate action and reports to provider.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS

  • Certification as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist/Medical Technologist in all disciplines by the Board of Registry of the American Society of Clinical Pathologist (ASCP).

  • CPR Training required and/or must be obtained within 45 days of hire for identified job roles.

  • MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's Degree in Clinical Laboratory Science or equivalent.

  • Six to twelve months of laboratory training/job experience necessary in order to become familiar with a variety of laboratory testing procedures.

  • Knowledge and experience preforming phlebotomy required.

  • Interpersonal skills necessary in order to communicate effectively with physicians, nursing personnel and other clinicians relative to patient testing and information gathering.

  • Ability to resolve technical problems using standard guides and procedures.

  • Analytical skills necessary in order to perform and interpret routine tests and recognize abnormal/critical test results.

  • Must be able to determine the appropriate course of action for abnormal, atypical or critical test results.

  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office and other Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) software preferred.

  • Ability to travel.

  • WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Laboratory service areas have work environments with frequent exposure to physical discomforts due to unpleasant odors from specimens and chemicals. Frequent exposure to infectious agents when handling hazardous material, but potential for personal harm or injury is reduced when proper safety and health precautions are followed.

Performs patient scheduling, registration processes, insurance verification, maintains account information, co-payments, referrals, authorizations, and billing inquiry functions. Reports to Manager/Supervisor.

  • Renders exceptional customer service to parents, patients, visitors and co-workers.

  • Serves as patient liaison for healthcare services.

  • Assists in maintaining medical records, filing systems, account balances and reconciliation of days accounts receivable.

  • May perform charge entry and charge batching processes as necessary.

  • Provides clerical and secretarial support.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS

  • MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • 2-3 years related work experience preferred.

  • Ability to sort and file materials correctly by alphabetical or numeric systems.

  • Knowledge of computer data entry processes required.
