Assistant Manager, Quantitative Modeling - Navy Federal Credit Union

Job Description

Overview

To assist with planning, managing, and directing quantitative modeling functions for the Lending Department. Assist in managing the development and improvement of complex models, documentation, and reports used to forecast losses, provision expenses, determine appropriate reserves, and forecast originations and other items for the annual budget exercise, and scheduled and unscheduled updates. Support senior management in developing and executing strategic plans. Work is performed under limited supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in managing the design of predictive and forecasting models, and other techniques to support quarterly loss provision forecast and budget exercises

  • Assist in managing large-scale modeling and data development projects to improve Lending's forecasting capability

  • Ensure that modeling specifications and constructs adhere to defined mathematical and statistical standards

  • Support quarterly CECL process, managing data improvement and validation, and assisting CECL reserve determination preparation

  • Manage model governance activities and coordinate with Model Risk Management to ensure validation frameworks and controls comply with Navy Federal and regulatory standards

  • Establish and strengthen system controls, facilitate process management, model performance and data reconciliation, and recommend improvements to modeling methodologies

  • Evaluate/develop/implement analytic and modeling techniques and best practices

  • Stay abreast of business direction, environment and strategy; ensure that analytic output meets business needs

  • Present modeling results and recommendations to executives and external parties

  • Collaborate with Technology Service to design and build the technology infrastructure necessary to support modeling efforts

  • Drive continuous process improvement to increase accuracy and efficiency of models and reduce financial and operational risk

  • Collaborate with internal business partners and external vendors to develop and validate models

  • Partner with senior management to ensure internal/external regulatory exam preparedness

  • Ensure that department adheres to modeling standards, guidelines, procedures, controls and best practices

  • Identify and resolve performance gaps and obstacles; develop and implement changes and improvements

  • Participate on organization wide project teams and monitor projects assigned to the department to ensure milestones are completed on schedule

  • Serve as subject matter expert regarding section functions, systems, policies and/or procedures

  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Significant experience in presenting findings, conclusions, alternatives and information clearly and concisely; significant experience in delivering presentations to virtual and in person teams; communicating highly complex technical concepts to non-technical staff and senior management

  • Significant experience in leading and managing data science or quantitative modeling projects or teams, preferably in a large financial services organization

  • Extensive experience in financial modeling using mathematical techniques, statistical methods, forecasting and related analytical tools; working or leading Time Series modeling experience is strongly desired

  • Significant experience in demonstrating thought-leadership, initiative-taking, decision-making and creativity solving business problems

  • Advanced skill interacting tactfully and effectively in difficult situations, exercising initiative and using good judgment to make sound decisions

  • Significant experience in model governance and controls and/or auditing

  • Experience with International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), Comprehensive Capital Analysis and Review (CCAR) Dodd-Frank Act Stress Test (DFAST) or Current Expected Credit Loss (CECL) standards

  • Working knowledge of any of the following: asset/liability management, financial accounting, cost accounting, budgeting principles and practices, statistics, finance, and/or mathematic modeling

  • Expert analytical/quantitative and deductive reasoning skills

  • Advanced research, data mining/querying, analysis, and reporting skills, including proficiency in sophisticated statistical methods and modeling, forecasting, and cost/benefit/risk analysis

  • Significant experience programming in SAS, R, Python or other language

  • Advanced skill in project management to include establishing and leading project teams; managing timelines/deadlines/resources; ensuring successful project implementation

  • Advanced skill to effectively manage a remote distributed workforce across multiple locations and time zones

  • Advanced skill establishing and maintaining working relationships with all levels of staff, management, stakeholders, and vendors

  • Expert verbal, interpersonal and written communication skills

  • Expert database, word processing, reporting, spreadsheet and presentation software skills

  • Master's degree in mathematics, statistics, data science, or related field, or the equivalent combination of education, training and experience

Overview

Provide technical and functional expertise in support of the strategic technology and business innovation programs. Analyze business needs and risks to develop and implement innovative solutions that leverage modern systems and functionality. Work with business teams to understand their pain points, risks, and needs related to technology and process redesign. Identifies, coordinates, documents, and implements business requirements by determining solutions that enhance business systems, as well as provides support to business processes. Overview

To respond to inquiries and requests from members and other individuals within a 24/7 high volume, schedule-driven and structured contact center operation (CCO). Provide information regarding Navy Federal products and services demonstrating knowledge, active listening, multiple system adaptability and engagement methods to ensure optimal member experience and customer service. Perform transactions or related functions for mortgage and/or other Navy Federal accounts. May perform transactions or related functions for savings, checking, consumer loans, credit cards, IRAs and/or other Navy Federal accounts. Responsibilities

  • Provide mortgage information to members regarding products, services, policies and rates Moderately complex/Varied

Overview

Responsibilities

  • Provide investment industry expertise to client investment consultations and servicing of life insurance and full suite of investment products

  • Administer and document account activity and execution in accordance with NFFG process and procedures and FINRA, NASAA, SEC regulations

  • Conduct review of accounts to communicate account status, explain activities and inform clients of new offerings

To interview and counsel members about first mortgage loans and to take mortgage loan applications. To establish and maintain personal relationship with members, and to guide and follow their mortgage loans from initial application through the loan closing process. Overview

Responsibilities

  • Develop robust and secure target architectures ensuring the integration points of end-user technology services and other related services are consistent, scalable, and flexible.

  • Develop architectural documentation and/or artifacts for use in business and technology projects, knowledge transfer, decision support, and product evaluation.

  • Lead technology vendor evaluation processes inclusive of activities associated with RFI, RFP, ultimately leading to a specific vendor product selection.

  • Create and maintain various product portfolio architecture views by gathering information from stakeholders around strategic planning, pain points, dependencies, and other business roadmaps.

  • Provide guidance and support to business and IT stakeholders to accomplish strategic visions.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field, or the equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

  • Should have experience of architecting and delivering solutions across multiple enterprise architecture domains (technology, application, information, and infrastructure).

  • Demonstrated Architectural experience of designing and advising on enterprise-wide infrastructure technologies supported in a multitude of deployment locations and ecosystems including PaaS, SaaS, IaaS, storage, networks, etc.

  • Demonstrated experience with the cloud computing, hosting, and managed services constructs to effectively architect and transition on-premise solutions to the cloud.

  • Experience with standardizing processes, documentation, tooling, and leading different architecture services.

  • Experience in systems design and architecture for large scale platforms or suite of applications driving modernization strategies into execution (Mainframe to Microservices). Cloud Computing experience with any service provider like Azure, AWS or GCP.

  • Demonstrated experience translating business needs and requirements into comprehensive, useful, and clear architecture designs (i.e., logical architecture, system interaction) and artifacts.

  • Demonstrated experience facilitating review and validation of architecture designs by technical and nontechnical audiences.

  • Demonstrated experience interpreting and executing on architecture designs into IT solutions and roadmaps to achieve specific business outcomes.

  • Demonstrated experience in performing various forms of analysis including systems analysis, business process analysis and/or Fit/Gap analysis.

Responsibilities

  • Manages group operations and oversees the accounting activities associated with allowance for credit losses / CECL and support related analytics and reporting

  • Develop a thorough understanding of the Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Accounting Standard Codification (ASC) 326 / Current Expected Credit Losses (CECL) and apply specialized knowledge and experience in accounting, analyzing and reporting financial information around allowance for credit losses

  • Collaborate with Business Partners across the Enterprise to understand the business needs, serve as point of contact for inquiries, problem resolution and ensure timely and accurate recording of transactions and accounting activities; including analytical review to ensure completeness and a accuracy of classes of transactions and account balances

  • Responsible for supervising and running monthly closing process and related monthly close activities, including monthly estimates, estimate updates throughout the month end close and review and/or approval of all standard, non-standard, and adjusting entries

  • Partner and coordinate with Accounting Policy team to ensure continuing compliance with accounting (e.g., Generally Accepted Accounting Principles - GAAP) and regulatory requirements (e.g., NCUA)

  • Lead the initiatives to design and build reporting tools, information dashboards and other data analytics to support strategic initiatives

  • Lead the identification and implementation of automation and process improvement initiatives, reviewing testing and presenting recommendations to leadership for implementation.

Qualifications

  • Extensive experience with financial accounting and management, including techniques used in the analysis and reporting of financial information, and review/effective challenge preferably in a financial services organization

  • Extensive experience in researching, interpreting, and applying GAAP and Accounting Standard Codifications

Overview

Lead the operations of the Technical Accounting team which includes functions such as serve as accounting expert and business partner for our internal business units, manage the accounting for complex accounting areas such as allowance for credit losses, lead the process for building and enhancing various analytics on portfolio risk metrics for leadership reporting, deliver process improvements and provide overall leadership to the team. Manage the development, periodic review and update and maintenance of risk, processes, controls, metrics residing within the respective teams. Support the Assistant Vice President of Technical Accounting in developing talent strategy, including talent development, succession planning etc. and lead the execution of talent strategy within the team. Collaborate with the other Managers on the team to support the execution of the operational strategy and ensure alignment with broader Finance and Corporate Accounting strategic goals.

Responsibilities

  • Manages group operations and oversees the accounting activities associated with allowance for credit losses / CECL and support related analytics and reporting

  • Develop a thorough understanding of the Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Accounting Standard Codification (ASC) 326 / Current Expected Credit Losses (CECL) and apply specialized knowledge and experience in accounting, analyzing and reporting financial information around allowance for credit losses

  • Collaborate with Business Partners across the Enterprise to understand the business needs, serve as point of contact for inquiries, problem resolution and ensure timely and accurate recording of transactions and accounting activities; including analytical review to ensure completeness and a accuracy of classes of transactions and account balances

  • Responsible for supervising and running monthly closing process and related monthly close activities, including monthly estimates, estimate updates throughout the month end close and review and/or approval of all standard, non-standard, and adjusting entries

  • Partner and coordinate with Accounting Policy team to ensure continuing compliance with accounting (e.g., Generally Accepted Accounting Principles - GAAP) and regulatory requirements (e.g., NCUA)

  • Lead the initiatives to design and build reporting tools, information dashboards and other data analytics to support strategic initiatives

  • Lead the identification and implementation of automation and process improvement initiatives, reviewing testing and presenting recommendations to leadership for implementation.

  • Collaborate with Enterprise Technology Services (ETS), Product Optimization team and other Business Units to provide subject matter expertise on group process and procedures, reviews and assists with the writing business requirements, and provides recommendations for enhancements

  • Responsible for handing requests from auditors (external and Internal) and regulators, including any follow up requests

  • Perform other related duties as assigned or appropriate

  • Serves as accounting subject matter expert and liaison for internal business partners and key external contacts

  • Research and analyze issues impacting allowance for credit losses and loan accounting and consult with Accounting Policy, as appropriate, and provide accounting guidance to business partners

  • Provide appropriate leadership and guidance to the team to perform technical research and tailor the communication of summary/conclusion to appropriate audience

  • Ensures key controls are implemented, executed, and adhered to, and reviews regularly for any required changes or new key controls

  • Establish goals and objectives that align with Department policies, procedures, and objectives and key results

  • Identify and select right talent for the team; onboard the team and provide positive experience for the team

  • Develop talent strategy to ensure expectations are understood, performance is measured and rewarded, feedback is provided timely to contribute to team's development

  • Develop and execute a plan that supports continued investment in creating bench strength and succession planning

  • Assist with budget requirements and contribute to forecasting and the preparation of the AFP

  • Monitors status of major projects and provides regular updates to leadership regarding progress, issues, and timelines

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field or the equivalent combination of education, training and experience

  • Certified Public Accountant designation in good standing

  • Extensive experience in financial services industry or public accounting firms researching and applying complex accounting treatments for loans and allowance for credit losses and resolving complex accounting issues.

  • Extensive experience with financial accounting and management, including techniques used in the analysis and reporting of financial information, and review/effective challenge preferably in a financial services organization

  • Extensive experience in researching, interpreting, and applying GAAP and Accounting Standard Codifications

  • Extensive experience in progressively responsible positions managing people in technical accounting or financial reporting area in a corporate environment that demonstrate the ability to organize, direct and control a multi-function operation, and drive the achievement of objectives, demonstrating strong leadership skills including managing, coaching, training and developing people

  • Ability and desire to lead the team by developing talent strategy to help them get to next level in their career and help realize operational efficiency

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities independently and/or in a team environment to achieve goals

  • Experience in leading complex projects and working with cross-functional teams.

  • Ability to see big picture with attention to detail within that topic/project/initiative

  • Strong verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills including the ability to interpret and present complex financial information clearly and concisely

  • Highly proficient in resolving conflicting requests and meeting changing requirements; exercising initiative and using good judgment to make sound decisions; and maintaining accuracy with attention to detail and meeting deadlines

Desired Qualifications

  • Prior experience with Big 4 public accounting firms, (e.g., Audit, Advisory, Consulting etc.)

  • Prior experience implementing and / or leading the loan accounting and allowance for credit losses processes

  • Experience with Oracle PeopleSoft or financial accounting & reporting automated systems, analytical and data visualization tools such as Tableau, Power Bi

  • Thorough knowledge of NCUA policies, procedures and regulations and their application to Navy Federal's organizational structure and operations

Support and lead the Enterprise Data Governance (EDG) Office in developing and enhancing data access management for our cloud enterprise data lake.
