Senior Tax Accountant - Cracker Barrel

The Senior Tax Accountant will assist the Sales and Use Tax Manager in directing the overall Local Tax activities of Indirect Tax to ensure the company's tax policies and procedures/policies are adhered to thus ensuring compliance with all tax laws for the jurisdictions where the company operates. Responsible for assisting with and completing the highly technical tax returns required to be filed by the appropriate taxing jurisdiction and with the related accounting.

  • Supervise and assist in the processing of sales & use tax, escheat property and local miscellaneous reports; review applicable regulations specific by state and ensure accuracy, compliance, and timely completion; may be required to prepare complex tax returns on an as needed basis.

  • Supervise and assist in the operation of the various tax systems such as Corpsales, Onbase etc; become knowledgeable and aware of the various systems and promote the most efficient use of the systems to increase productivity of Indirect Tax; review and ensure that the POS system and any other system is in compliance with the appropriate tax regulations.

  • Assist in researching and planning of various tax projects to optimize Cracker Barrel's overall tax liability; based on research recommend necessary changes, implement new procedures, and monitor results.

  • Assist in preparing and maintaining tax manuals that document Cracker Barrel's position on various procedures and issues; continue to update, maintain, develop, and document specific job procedures and duties that ensure job function may be performed in the absence of Cracker Barrel personnel, assist in training personnel in Indirect Tax and other Cracker Barrel departments dealing in tax matters; prepare complex tax returns on an as needed basis.

  • Assist in monitoring and reviewing the company's current technical systems and the day-to-day procedures performed by company's tax personnel to ensure that all activities are performed in the most efficient and effective manner; recognize and implement simpler approaches that save Cracker Barrel resources.

  • Assist in the accounting functions of Indirect Tax; prepare all journal entries for sales and use tax compliance and prepare the reconciliations of sales and use tax payables in Blackline.

  • Prepare the monthly accrual entries for business licenses/health permits and prepare the reconciliations of business licenses/health permits in Blackline.

Experience and Education

  • 3 - 6 years corporate sales and use tax compliance experience, relevant accounting experience will also be considered.

  • Bachelors' degree from accredited school=

Certifications

CPA or advanced degree preferred.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Thorough understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.

  • Thorough knowledge of multistate, sales and use tax, escheat property and local tax laws and

regulations.

  • Extensive knowledge of tax and/or accounting systems as well as systems of internal

control. Familiarity with ERP functionality. Experience with Infinium and its report writers preferred.

  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written.

  • Strong analytical and decision-making skills.

  • Excel proficiency required.

  • Ability to prioritize responsibilities, coordinate multiple assignments simultaneously and complete

projects within deadlines.

  • Strong leadership skills.

  • High degree of integrity.

  • Ability to train and motivate others.

The Supply Chain Manager is responsible for ensuring that Cracker Barrel Old Country Store restaurants are continuously supplied with the specified products at the best possible cost. Principal accountabilities include the management of a portfolio of products and categories related to Food, including the development and implementation of purchasing strategies for the assigned categories, negotiating and documenting supply agreements, managing supplier performance and relationships, identifying and developing sources of supply for new and existing products, and working with a variety of cross-functional teams. This role will be the primary contact internally and externally for the portfolio of products managed.

- Develop and implement strategies to identify the optimum supplier base, term of agreements, pricing methodologies, and other terms and conditions.

- Negotiate supply agreements, analyze proposals, and provide recommendations in support of approved purchasing strategies and the department mission.

- Monitor and proactively communicate changes to existing supplier capacity/distribution capabilities to ensure that all quality, cost and service expectations are met.

- Manage supplier relationships, performance, and adherence to the negotiated supply agreements.

- Work with distributors as needed to manage product rollouts and inventory, and to resolve issues.

- Maintain knowledge of market and supplier landscape to identify and build relationships with potential suppliers.

- Be the company expert and resource for assigned industries, commodities, products, and suppliers.

- Monitor respective commodities, develop strategies, and present appropriate recommendations.

- Support and manage product needs for tests, projects, limited time offers, and the core menu.

- Work with cross functional teams such as: Supply Chain, Culinary, Quality Assurance, Menu Strategy, and other departments to resolve issues and identify and secure opportunities.

- Lead and support the development of specifications, product sample requests, business process development, analysis, and continuous improvement projects.

- Some travel may be required.

- Regularly update price forecasts for assigned products.

Experience and Education

- Bachelor's degree with three-four years of direct and relevant work experience.

- Restaurant industry, Supply Chain, Finance, or Project Management experience a plus.

- Prior contract knowledge or experience a plus.

- Ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities.

Knowledge and Skills

The Payroll Coordinator processes and maintains store hourly payroll records. Receives and verifies for accuracy employee personnel and payroll information such as hours worked, insurance, or other deductions to be withheld, and employee social security/identification numbers. Records and enters payroll information or changes affecting net wages, such as exemptions, deductions, etc.. Researches wages computed and corrects errors to ensure accuracy of payroll. Prints and issues payroll checks.

-Processes store hourly payroll, including store opening trainers, in a timely manner. Researches and

audits for accuracy weekly store payroll transmissions; may require manual submission and retrieval of

timecards, hours worked, vacation requests, etc. via fax, telephone, and/or mail. Enters various payroll

transactions such as vacations, addition/deletion of indirect tips, rehires, terminations in error, etc.

Researches and resolves payroll discrepancies (i.e. wrong employee numbers, hours charged to

wrong stores, job class, rate of pay, deductions, etc.). Balances trial register with store payroll

transmittal incorporating all payroll corrections to include back pay, vacation, bonus, borrowed

manpower, insufficient/excessive tips, etc. Review hours out of home store(report) by contacting the

stores by email and making the necessary transfers once confirmed by store management. Prints and

issues checks.

-Calculate and enter sick pay requests for store hourly employees that are emailed from the managers.

-Reviews and verifies for accuracy store hourly new hire paperwork and personnel and payroll information

entered at the store. Identifies errors and contacts store manager to notify and obtain correct

information; makes necessary revisions and/or sends out new forms for completion. Verifies and

processes employee address changes. Identifies incorrect social security numbers and verifies

information with the store manager; monitors social security numbers for duplicate use and/or

undocumented individuals.

-Processes and enters all new store hourly personnel new hire paperwork. Maintains store hourly payroll

records for W-2s; processes and issues W-2 forms.

-Researches and resolves employees' payroll questions. Calculates check amount and reissues ondemand check. Logs, completes, and files documentation.

-Orders stop payments on lost checks; verifies check status with bank to ensure that it has not cleared.

Faxes lost check affidavit to employee for completion and processes new check. Collaborates with

Accounts Payable to reissue forged checks. Reviews and mails checks returned by the stores.

Processes 30-day old checks after they have been verified through the bank that there are no stop

payments on them.

-Monitors employee active status and contacts manager after four weeks of inactivity to terminate

employee, place on leave, or return to work. Collaborate with Compensation & Benefits and Risk

Management on disability/leave issues.

-Research requests from legal pertaining to wage discrepancy and process back pay after legal approves.

-Review state tax forms and update as needed.

-Other dept duties: Sends monthly US census report to the us census bureau, ordering department

supplies, maintaining inventory of payroll checks and contacting vendors for pricing when check stock

needs to be replenished, submits supplies, maintenance and equipment costs to the Payroll Manager

for fiscal year budget, maintaining the check printers, pressure sealers and laser printers and ordering

supplies and contacting the vendor for equipment repair to keep those in working order, Installs printer

consumables, run print samples for visual and quality inspection before checks are printed, reconciling

invoices for payment, distributes department mail, submit payroll percent summary each week.

-Researches and resolves employees' payroll questions and assists employees with Paycard issues,

working as a liaison between Skylight/Netspend and the employee.

-Answer live calls from the online wage statement line, return calls from messages left on OLWS voice

mailbox, answers via email OLWS email box for resetting passwords so that employees can gain

access to their wage statements and W-2s.

-Take messages from the W-2 voice mail box and email box from employees who want to change their

address for the purpose of receiving a W-2 by mail, this requires the coordinator to sign into skylight

and print off the w-2 and mail it to the employee.

Experience and Education

-High School Diploma and 1-3 years office experience; or 3+ years Payroll experience; or equivalent

combination of education and experience.

Environment and Working Conditions

-Current Work Schedule: Three days in the office required, hybrid flexibility for two days.

-The Payroll Coordinator position requires you to work longer hours on Monday & Tuesday (9 - 10 hours);

however, you are encouraged to take those hours off Wednesday - Friday by taking a longer lunch or

leaving early as long as there is coverage for the phones.
