Job Description

Vaughn & Melton, a JMT Company is seeking a Licensed Land Surveyor with 3-5 years' experience. This position plans, organizes and directs work of other surveyors and technicians engaged in surveying the earth's surface to determine precise location and measurements of points, elevations, lines, area, and contours for construction, mapmaking, utility locations, subsurface utility engineering (SUE), land division, titles or other purposes. The successful candidate will promote safe work practices of all survey staff. They will evaluate progress of the staff, obtain results, and recommend major changes to achieve overall results. They will also represent the company in meetings and conferences with clients and potential clients.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Assumes supervisory responsibility and performs as staff advisor and consultant for surveying functions and personnel management

  • Coordinates findings with work of engineering, right-of-way, and/or utility coordination personnel, clients, and others concerned with a project

  • Will determine scope of work, job objectives, and man-hour budgets on projects assigned to the surveying group in concurrence with other project managers and supervisors

  • Maintains liaison with individuals and units within or outside the organization with responsibility for acting independently on technical matters

  • Researches previous survey evidence, maps, deeds, physical evidence, and other records to obtain data needed for surveys

  • Makes decisions independently on surveying problems and methods and represents the organization in conferences and meetings to resolve important questions, and to plan and coordinate work

  • Plans and develops surveying projects concerned with unique or controversial problems which have an important effect on firm's major projects

  • Analyze survey objectives and specifications to prepare survey proposals or to direct others in survey proposal preparation

  • Schedules, assigns and directs projects concerning surveying within the firm

  • Prepare or supervise preparation of all data, charts, plots, maps, records, and documents related to surveys

  • Train assistants and helpers and direct their work in such activities as performing surveys or drafting maps

  • Develop criteria for survey methods and procedures

Required Skills

Required Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree (four-year college or technical school) preferred, Field of Study: Land Surveying, Civil Engineering or similar degree type.

  • 3-5 plus years of experience in Land Surveying and/or Professional Licensure

  • Professional License as Land Surveyor in Tennessee and other states that would be helpful include: Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina or Georgia; NCEES Certification preferred.

  • Experience using Trimble Instruments, MicroStation, AutoCAD, Carlson, Microsoft Office suite

Working Conditions

Work is performed within a general office environment 80% of the time. Work is generally sedentary in nature, but may require occasional standing and walking. The successful candidate will be able to report to our Lexington Office, and will be responsible for structural engineering design using knowledge of general engineering principles and practices to interpret, organize, execute and coordinate assignments with limited supervision. The Structural Project Engineer will be responsible for engineering design of transportation structures including bridge superstructure, substructures, culverts, retaining walls, and sign structures using knowledge of structure engineering principles and practices to interpret, organize, execute and coordinate assignments with limited supervision. This position includes the supervision, training, and development of the region's pursuit coordinators as well as facilitating the implementation and compliance with corporate marketing procedures and serves as a general marketing-related point of contact for all regional staff, corporate technical practice leaders, and the corporate marketing team.

The selected candidate will be an integral part of the region's management team and must have leadership experience.

Essential functions and responsibilities

  • Day-to-day management of the marketing process and staff (Senior Pursuit Coordinators and Pursuit Coordinators), and marketing support functions performed by Administrative Assistants across the region. Typical activities completed by this group include, but are not limited to, the following activities:

  • Identification, tracking, and management of leads and opportunities and pre-planning of pursuit activities utilizing JMT's CRM system and coordination with technical staff

  • Coordination of the proposal development process with Proposal Managers/Project Managers and other staff to ensure timely, high-quality submissions, completed in accordance with defined quality procedures

  • Preparation, formatting, review, and submission of proposal documents and other collateral

  • Entry of pursuit-related data within JMT's CRM system, including staff resumes and project experience descriptions, and completion of pursuit closeout processes

  • Coordination/development of marketing collateral, presentations, award submissions and other materials in support of broader business development and marketing activities

  • Coordination of conference/seminar and other event participation

  • Responsible for the recruitment, supervision, and development of pursuit coordinator staff, including recruitment and onboarding, performance appraisals, recommendations for promotions and salary adjustments, development/implementation of training tools, materials and programs, and participation with regional and corporate marketing meetings and events. Develop and routinely update workload projections to determine required staffing levels. Conduct regular team meetings with staff to review schedules, resource allocations, quality, and other items that ensure effective communications, a friendly team atmosphere, and connectivity with companywide marketing staff.

  • Responsible for routine reporting on marketing statistics and information at the regional and office level, including the development and maintenance of advanced dashboards and reports. Routinely review marketing statistics and provide insights to regional and office leadership to help ensure an optimized approach to project selection and alignment with strategic goals. Participate in monthly leadership meetings at the regional, office and corporate marketing levels.

  • Conduct occasional market research as identified by the corporate management, Regional Managers, Regional Business Development Managers, Practice Leaders, Office Leaders, and Section Heads.

  • Identify and provide recommendations to ensure continuous improvement of marketing staff, systems, and deliverables to maintain a competitive edge. Job Description

Vaughn & Melton, a JMT Company is seeking a Licensed Land Surveyor with 3-5 years' experience. This position plans, organizes and directs work of other surveyors and technicians engaged in surveying the earth's surface to determine precise location and measurements of points, elevations, lines, area, and contours for construction, mapmaking, utility locations, subsurface utility engineering (SUE), land division, titles or other purposes. The successful candidate will promote safe work practices of all survey staff. They will evaluate progress of the staff, obtain results, and recommend major changes to achieve overall results. They will also represent the company in meetings and conferences with clients and potential clients.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Assumes supervisory responsibility and performs as staff advisor and consultant for surveying functions and personnel management

  • Coordinates findings with work of engineering, right-of-way, and/or utility coordination personnel, clients, and others concerned with a project

  • Will determine scope of work, job objectives, and man-hour budgets on projects assigned to the surveying group in concurrence with other project managers and supervisors

  • Maintains liaison with individuals and units within or outside the organization with responsibility for acting independently on technical matters

  • Researches previous survey evidence, maps, deeds, physical evidence, and other records to obtain data needed for surveys

  • Makes decisions independently on surveying problems and methods and represents the organization in conferences and meetings to resolve important questions, and to plan and coordinate work

  • Plans and develops surveying projects concerned with unique or controversial problems which have an important effect on firm's major projects

  • Analyze survey objectives and specifications to prepare survey proposals or to direct others in survey proposal preparation

  • Schedules, assigns and directs projects concerning surveying within the firm

  • Prepare or supervise preparation of all data, charts, plots, maps, records, and documents related to surveys

  • Train assistants and helpers and direct their work in such activities as performing surveys or drafting maps

  • Develop criteria for survey methods and procedures

Nonessential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Required Skills

  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations

  • Ability to communicate effectively with others using the spoken word

  • Ability to communicate in writing clearly and concisely

Required Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree (four-year college or technical school) preferred, Field of Study: Land Surveying, Civil Engineering or similar degree type.

  • 3-5 plus years of experience in Land Surveying and/or Professional Licensure

  • Professional License as Land Surveyor in Tennessee and other states that would be helpful include: Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina or Georgia; NCEES Certification preferred.

  • Experience using Trimble Instruments, MicroStation, AutoCAD, Carlson, Microsoft Office suite

Working Conditions

Work is performed within a general office environment 80% of the time. Work is generally sedentary in nature, but may require occasional standing and walking. Lighting and temperature are adequate and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. within the office environment.

Field work is required on occasion where work may be conducted outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions. Some lifting (up to 25 lbs) may be required as needed.
