The Real Estate Lending (REL) Technology Services team is responsible for delivering secure, scalable, and channel agnostic member-centric back-end integration capabilities and support Real Estate Lending applications, accelerating the digital transformation, and empowering teams to innovate and deliver products and services through collaboration. The REL Technology Product Owner (TPO) leads three verticals with 40+ employees and consultants. A Technology Product Manager (TPM) is responsible for providing a complete product lifecycle management from design, analysis, build, manage, operate, and retire. REL Technology Services functions and delivers in a Scale Agile framework (SAFe) and is the technology owner of an extensive list of homegrown and COT solutions primarily developed in .NET, Java, MS Dynamics CRM, PEGA System, and other technologies.
The summer associate role will be as an ISD Technical Analyst supporting the REL Technology Services team.
The Summer Associate Program is a 12-week internship program beginning in May 2024 and ending in August 2024. Students will work on impactful projects and meaningful work during their internship. To qualify for this position, applicants must be currently pursuing a degree from an accredited college or university and have an anticipated graduation date of December 2024 or later.
Responsibilities
Partners with TPO for overall product board/backlog creation, maintenance, and management; orders backlog items to best achieve goals and optimize the value of each sprint
Clearly presents status and issues in variety of oral and written formats and leads product meetings.
Authors wide variety of user stories/features/product backlog items; provides critical feedback to other stories/features/backlog items.
Liaises between product team and business area.
Conducts requirements analysis and validation, ensuring requirements are complete, consistent, concise, comprehensible, traceable, feasible, unambiguous, and verifiable, and that they conform to standards.
Solves business problems by defining systems solutions via interviewing stakeholders, identifying and evaluating alternatives, and presenting findings.
Recognizes and proactively raises issues or risks along with well-considered solutions.
Elicits and documents functional and non-functional requirements using variety of techniques, including interviews, document analysis, storyboards, use cases, scenarios, and diagramming.
Represents requirements using alternative views, such as epics/features/stories/product backlog items, models, diagrams, prototypes, or scenarios, to facilitate communication to the project / product team.
Tracks and manages requirements status and changes throughout project / product lifecycle via board/backlog management and maintenance.
Creates and communicates artifacts translating business needs into executable requirements.
Continually seeks opportunities to improve and increase level of industry/domain-specific knowledge by remaining current with emerging products and technical updates.
Presents project, product, or other material at All Hands meetings.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
ISD Technical Analyst should be working towards a degree in Business Administration, Business Information Technology or similar major.
Possesses/maintains advanced skills with data querying, reporting, and analysis, comfortable recommending solutions to problems
Possesses/maintains problem resolution including determining root cause, scope and scale of issues
Possesses/maintains advanced verbal and written communication skills
Possesses/maintains experience with Microsoft Office suite, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Visio; artifacts and deliverables are polished and professional
Experience in SQL and VBA database languages
Demonstrates significant creativity and variety of approaches to solving business and technical problems
Demonstrates competence in planning, organization, and multi-tasking, of large and complex efforts.

The Security/Cyber Governance, Communications & Reporting team collaboratively aligns and engages the organization by increasing awareness of security best practices. The team's work reduces enterprise risk through creating influential, customer-focused security communication, education and design, including Front Office and Board updates.
Services consist of these functional areas:
Risk Governance and Reporting: Facilitates Security Department governance framework and associated risk reporting for senior management and the Board of Directors, including:
Monthly Security Risk Forum briefing to the Chief Security Officer
Joint Information Services and Security Sub-committee briefing to the Chief Security Officer, Chief Information Officer, and EVP Digital
Security Department briefings to the Front Office
Board and Board Committee briefings
Education, Awareness and Employee Communications: Educates members and employees on cybersecurity compliance and best practices through targeted topical communication, National Cybersecurity, Insider Threat, and Fraud Awareness Months, mandatory compliance training, and phishing alerts, (Includes team of multi-media design resources.)

The Governance & Risk Reporting (Security) Summer Associate will partner with Risk Governance and Reporting leadership on the following initiatives:

Managing technology and cyber risks is a top priority for Navy Federal since these types of risks exist across the enterprise. Tech and cyber risk areas are measured by system and information (data) availability, accessibility, performance, reliability, confidentiality, and integrity. The Technology Risk Advisory Team focuses on three areas of strategic priority:
Technology Transformation: This focuses on partnering with the Enterprise Program Management Office and first line of defense Tech Transformation owners to drive awareness of risks within ongoing initiatives for further risk management throughout the lifecycle.
Enterprise Data Governance Oversight: which focuses on oversight and independent assessment efforts for effective implementation of enterprise data governance policies, standards, requirements & best practices to maximize the value of data as an asset for Navy Federal.
Tech Risk Advisory Office: This focuses on advancing risk advisory service offerings, capabilities, support, and visibility to reinforce risk-informed decision-making for Navy Federal leadership and TCRM risk partners.

-Technology Transformation & Data Risk Management - researching emerging technologies, leading practices & control frameworks to support oversight of technology and cybersecurity risks to NFCU programs and projects; may include quantitative and/or qualitative analysis
-Perform operational support to Tech Risk Advisory Program, including managing intake requests, managing the advisory workflow process including tracking, executing and completion advisory support requests
Maintain professionalism in all interactions, placing member service as a priority
Provide comprehensive day-to-day operational support
Process and update data in automated systems; may generate and analyze reports
Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Currently pursuing a bachelor's or master's degree (BS/MS preferred)
Preferred coursework/capstone work in technology or scientific research, with an ongoing desire to gain deep expertise.
Working knowledge of Information Systems.

Overview
Model risk is the potential for adverse consequences (e.g., financial loss, poor business or strategic decisions, reputational damage) arising from decisions based on incorrect or misused model outputs and reports. Model risk comes down to making informed business decisions by understanding a model's weaknesses or limitations. With a variety of models designed to maintain Navy Federal's financial stability and its ability to make impactful member-related decisions, it is more important than ever to ensure those models are tested, challenged on current model usage and practices, and assessed on the effectiveness for their intended uses.

MRM is responsible for maintaining a governance framework that standardizes model risk activities from model development through retirement. MRM uses control processes to ensure sound model risk management across all model lifecycle activities.
Core components of Model Risk Management's role include:
Identification
Maintaining a full inventory of models including documentation, code, and datasets
Assessment
Assessing the conceptual soundness of models and their risk through analysis
Recommending model performance enhancements and risk mitigations
Monitoring
Monitoring model usage, changes, performance, data drift, and production errors
Reporting
Providing an enterprise-level assessment of model risk
Tracking the status of individual model risk findings and approving mitigation/remediation plans
Project - Model Validation:
The summer associate will complete an end-to-end validation of one of Navy Federal's predictive models. This validation would include analyzing the model's data, conceptual soundness, key assumptions, limitations, estimation, calibration, and implementation as appropriate. The validation may also include developing a challenger model against the original model design. At the conclusion of the validation, the summer associate will have identified a list of model risk findings that will be presented to the Model Owner for remediation. The selected model for this project may be within a variety of possible subject domains, such as fraud detection, targeted marketing, underwriting, financial forecasting, and more.
Project Steps:
Review model documentation and meet with business owners as needed to gain an understanding of the model
Conduct a complete independent model validation, which may include, but is not limited to, assessments of the following:
Model theoretical framework, fitting methods, assumptions
Data creation process, including data preparation and data quality
Model specification
Model development and performance testing, which may include in-sample, out-of-sample, out-of-time back testing, sensitivity testing, stress testing, and performance monitoring results
Ongoing monitoring plan, including proposed or existing ongoing monitoring metrics and thresholds
Appropriateness of the implementation testing plan scope in context of associated model risk, testing metrics, and user acceptance testing (UAT)
Code and calculations associated with development/estimation and/or implementation
Model documentation including completeness, accuracy, level of details
Document and quantify the materiality of each finding
Develop recommendations for model developers to mitigate the risks identified

Responsibilities
Leverage technologies - including Python and R - to analyze and gain insights within large data sets
Evaluate model design and performance and perform champion/challenger development. Analyze model input data, assumptions, and overall methodology.
Using statistical practices, analyze current and historical data to make predictions, and identify risks, and opportunities, enabling better decisions on planned/future events
Provide analytics insights and solutions to solve complex business problems
Examine data from multiple sources and share insights with leadership and stakeholders
Transform data presented in models, charts, and tables into a format that is useful to the business and aids in effective decision-making
Develop and maintain an understanding of relevant industry standards, best practices, business processes, and technology used in modeling and within the financial services industry
Assess the model's overall fit/suitability with its intended use and purpose
Provide subject matter expertise to identify models' key assumptions, limitations, and weaknesses, and recommend practical solutions to mitigate model risk
Prepare and present clear, thorough reports to model developers and model owners explaining the analysis performed, the results of the analysis, and recommendations for improvement
Qualifications
Pursuing master's degree in Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering or another quantitative field, or related field
Ability to understand complex business problems
Skill in communicating actionable insights using data to technical and non-technical audiences
Skill in descriptive, predictive, and prescriptive analytics and modeling
Experience in using classification models to solve business problems

Overview
The ISD Risk Management team supports the Information Services Department (ISD) by providing a holistic view and proactive monitoring of technology risks to allow for more educated decision-making around those risks. Overview
The TDP Operations, Product and Support (TOPS) team partners with Transaction and Document Processing (TDP) operational branches to deliver efficient and scalable business outcomes through product lifecycle management. Overview
Team Overview: The Balance Sheet Planning (BSP) team is a part of the Strategic Finance division. As one of the Finance Department's analytical hubs, the team is tasked with supporting strategy recommendations and assessing the financial impact of corporate business decisions. One of BSP's responsibilities is developing corporate balance sheet and income statement forecasts on a quarterly basis and Navy Federal's annual budget forecast. BSP works collaboratively with teams from across the organization to develop these forecasts. Additionally, the team monitors Navy Federal's monthly financial performance, supports the Corporate Economist, and develops financial analyses on market competitors.
The Summer Associate Program is a 12-week internship program beginning in May 2024 and ending in August 2024. Students will work on impactful projects and meaningful work during their internship. To qualify for this position, applicants must be currently pursuing a degree from an accredited college or university and have an anticipated graduation date of December 2024 or later.
Responsibilities
The Summer Associate will work in a hybrid manner and report to leadership at the Vienna, VA campus. The individual will work collaboratively with the team and independently on their own deliverables.
Candidates will gain the following:
To develop strategic problem-solving, quantitative analytics, and communication skills
Proficiency in financial analysis software including Oracle SmartView and S&P Global Market Intelligence

Knowledge with the objective of developing into a financial business analyst
Presentation opportunities in front of senior Strategic Finance leadership
Job shadowing opportunities in other departments
Candidates will work on:
Analysis of business portfolio performance using data manipulation and visualization techniques
Project-based work on financial analysis of competitor institutions
Supporting forecast model improvements through the analysis of key business trends
Qualifications
Course work in Finance, Accounting, and Economics, but not required to be concentrated in these fields
Strong critical and analytical thinking skills
Advanced knowledge of Excel
Ability to work independently and collaboratively
Strong communication and presentation-building skills
Experience with research, analysis, and data manipulation
Hours: Monday - Friday 8:00AM - 4:30PM
