Construction Risk- Engineer/Specialist

Description

Overview:

Southern Company Gas is looking for talented individuals interested in joining this country's vital natural gas industry. Natural Gas is an essential part of America's Energy mix and a trusted energy source for more than 70 million homes and businesses. This position is an exciting opportunity for persons who enjoy the challenges of supporting the construction of natural gas facilities

The purpose of this position is to provide field support and lead process improvement projects on behalf of the Southern Company Gas Construction Risk program (quality, compliance, critical safety risks, etc.). As a subject matter expert for multiple intiatives the individual will serve as a liaison between Construction Operations, pipeline contractors and various departments at Southern Company Gas helping drive change in training, policies and procedures. The right candidate must be a self-starter, excellent communicator, and able to make sound decisions.

Please note, this position is posted as a job family and can be filled at a Construction Risk Engineer/Specialist, (Level 4) or Sr. Construction Risk Engineer/Specialist (Level 5) depending on experience. It can either be located in Atlanta, Naperville or Glen Ellyn

The Specialist/Engineer, Construction is a focused discipline within a job family. The duties listed are activities associated with the various levels of the Specialist/Engineer progression. This progression covers the following general titles:

  • Spec/Engr, Construction Risk

  • Sr Spec/Engr, Construction Risk

Responsibilities:

  • Supports, consults, coordinates and provides feedback to the Construction Operations team, contractors and other departments in the area of Construction Risk (quality, compliance, critical safety risks, etc.) based on federal and state regulations, company and industry standards, field assessments and IT data.

  • Takes the lead as project manager for process improvement projects (policies, procedures, OPM) in the area of Construction Risk (quality, compliance and critical safety risks) leveraging technology to create value and efficiency.

  • Conducts field assessments of construction activities (distribution, transmission and large projects) of both contractor crews and internal construction crews to evaluate Construction Risk (quality, compliance, critical safety risks, etc.)

  • Conducts special and large scale assessments for construction operations over a wide variety of topics (e.g. new/ revised procedures, full LDC, specific contractor, damage investigation, specific quality activity, etc)

  • Leverages tools like Human Performance and API 1173 in the pursuit of continuous improvement.

  • Supports corporate efforts in becoming a Learning Organization.

  • Provides first level support for all Construction Risk Management systems (e.g CQA, Survey Monkey, SharePoint, etc.).

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Required:

  • High level of interpersonal skills, with ability to leverage internal and external stakeholders to efficiently accomplish tasks and resolve issues

  • Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 tools (e.g. Excel, Word, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Teams, etc.)

Preferred:

  • Experience with energy related (e.g. gas, electric, etc) regulations, policies, procedures, and operations manuals

  • Intermediate computer proficiency in business related tools (e.g. Power BI, Work Management, etc)

  • Intermediate experience leveraging Project Management best practices

Education and Experience

Required:

  • Valid driver's license

  • Associates or Bachelor's Degree in technical, engineering or business related field (e.g. construction management)

  • 2-4 years of experience operations, construction, project management, engineering, quality, safety

Preferred:

  • 5-7 years of experience operations, construction, project management, engineering, quality, safety

  • 1-2 years supervisory or project leader experience

  • Professional certification (e.g. project management, safety/quality management, etc)

Military Experience:

  • Military experience and training may be evaluated as a potential equivalent for education, experience, skills and knowledge

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:

  • Occasional Traveler (5-20% travel): The incumbent will be required to travel on occasion. Trips may require air travel and/or overnight stay away from home for one or more nights.

  • Position is hybrid in nature (office environment & field visits)

  • This position may/will provide exposure to hazardous conditions and materials (e.g. weather, noise, fumes, etc.)

Description

Purpose :

This position will be filled in the Data Analytics & Reporting team within Technology Services. Key responsibilities as a member of the team include detailed data analysis, data modeling and requirements mapping, ETL design and development, analysis cube development, and BI solution development including presentation layer delivery. This position also works closely with Data Architects within the organization to ensure that new analytics solutions align with the enterprise data management strategy. This includes identification of the true source of data, reducing data redundancy and focus on increased integration of data across business units. This includes increasing data quality, compliance, and governance.

Additional requirements of this position include consulting with partners on their business needs, translating business needs into analytics/reporting requirements, and interfacing with the partners and other IT team members to build custom business intelligence solutions. The successful candidate will have proven ability to analyze and troubleshoot issues that arise within BI and analytics toolsets and the enterprise infrastructure supporting these solutions.

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science/Engineering or related degree preferred

  • Experience with implementing BI/analytics solutions using the Microsoft BI/analytics toolset

  • Experience working in a fast-paced, competitive information technology organization

Knowledge/Skills:

. Strong technical knowledge implementing business intelligence solutions using the Microsoft BI toolset:

Description

Purpose :

This position will be filled in the Data Analytics & Reporting team within Technology Services. Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science/Engineering or related degree preferred

  • Experience with implementing BI/analytics solutions using the Microsoft BI/analytics toolset

Knowledge/Skills:

PD Tuscaloosa (South Operations - Tuscaloosa Distribution Engineering)

Position Duties

This position will be filled as an Engineer at grade levels 3-6 depending on the qualifications of the successful candidate. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing an assigned territory within Tuscaloosa Distribution Engineering. The primary job duties will be centered around providing safe, reliable, timely and economical electric service to residential, commercial, and industrial customers. The successful candidate will meet with customers to determine their electric service needs and prepare work orders to provide service. This position will also be expected to assist with preparing work orders to improve the reliability of the electrical distribution system. Additionally, there may also be opportunities to engineer major projects such as roadway relocations, budget items, and subdivisions. This position will also participate in after-hours and off system storm restoration efforts and participate in the after-hours on call rotation.

Job Experience and Education

  • A bachelor's degree in engineering from an ABET accredited university/college is required

  • Previous electrical distribution engineering experience is preferred

  • Experience in engineering, design, and construction of electrical distribution systems is preferred

  • Proven record of success in a team environment

  • Current work experience within APC Power Delivery is a plus

  • Previous experience in service restoration efforts is preferred

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

As a member of the CBM & Machinery Diagnostics team, this position is responsible for testing, analysis, and support for all generating facilities (Fossil, Hydro, Nuclear, Gas, Renewables, and Distributed) within the Southern Company fleet. The position will have a wide variety of individual and teamwork assignments in testing, analyzing, and evaluating solutions. This position will also provide diagnostics and analytics support to the Operations Monitoring & Diagnostic (OM&D) Center for detecting and troubleshooting equipment issues.

WORK LOCATION:

This position will be based in Birmingham, AL; however, flexible scheduling is offered with some virtual opportunities. Successful candidates must be willing to travel to office and/or field locations on a frequent and as-needed basis. This position will require a mix of in-person work at the Energy Center Office in Birmingham as well as travel and work at all Southern Company Generation facilities.

Summary of Position Duties:

  • Provide expert diagnosis and support in Vibration Diagnostics, Equipment Balancing and Alignment, and related areas.

  • Support Plant CBM (Condition Based Maintenance) Specialists, System Owners, OM&D Analysts, and others to resolve equipment and process issues.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Supply Chain Management, Business, Technology, Finance, or other relevant technical discipline preferred

  • Typically manages between $100M - $300M in annual spend

  • Leads negotiations, oversees all stages of strategic procurement.

  • Helps facilitate supplier performance measurement and collaborates with key suppliers to identify potential areas for improvement.

  • Manages and identifies supplier alliance opportunities. Supports internal utility Business Unit's supplier management efforts.

  • Performs thorough analysis to support the development of category plans, including but not limited to meeting with internal customers to understand their needs, requirements, and plans; determining the impact of joint efforts on supplier KPIs; analyzing historical spend; forecasting future spend based on demand planning; building cost models; calculating total cost of ownership (TCO); creating supplier value.

We are looking for a reliable Dispatcher to provide effective and efficient scheduling and routing of emergency and non-emergency work to field technicians. Provide excellent customer service with inbound customer inquiries as well as outbound follow-up calls. The Dispatcher is responsible for setting up the technician's workload assignments, monitoring those assignments, and supporting the Field Technicians and the Call Centers. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Monitors emergency and non-emergency orders to ensure orders are routed and completed by the appointed time including emergency locates.

- Routes filler work to field service personnel by dispatching work orders via Mobile Data and/or Radio; by date and compliance deadline.

- Evaluates field service routes; provides optimized routes for various field service personnel; adjusts field service personnel allocations based on quantity and severity of workload, and availability of resources.

- Monitors field personnel efficiency throughout the day and makes recommendations to Resource Management Supervision based on findings.

- Assigns, dispatches, and tracks emergency orders to ensure compliance to standards.

- Gathers information for Pre-Notice of Incident (NOI) Reports; routes to Public Service Commission (PSC), Utility Protection Center (UPC), Community Affairs and Safety, Security & Corporate Compliance, STS).

- Assists Sr. Dispatcher during mass outages to obtain information and coordinate activities of field service personnel.

- Complete the 2pm route review to determine the need for overtime to complete remaining workload and report findings to the service center Point of Contact.

- Verifies completion of previous day's orders; investigates and takes action on incomplete orders.

- Assists field service personnel (e.g., checks account histories, meter status, premise conditions, appliance type and quantity, Meter Order Field Reading (MOFR), Shut Off for Non-Payment (SONP) orders, pending, why-noted orders).

- Assists Customer Service Representatives (CSRs) with Estimated Time of Arrivals (ETAs) and technical questions; interprets codes and clarifies field service personnel comments.

- Understand the basics fundamentals of Sentinel and the forecasting model.

JOB SUMMARY

This position reports to the Distribution Construction Supervisor and is responsible for contract crews performing overhead/underground new construction maintenance trouble calls and storm response. This position is also responsible for joint trench installation and billing, overhead re-conducting, cable replacement, storm duty, the safety of service crews and their performance in the Valdosta or Macon Distribution Area.

JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsibilities include (but not limited to): Coordinating contract resources to ensure Distribution Construction Achieves Safety Excellence, budgetary needs, productivity, schedules, customer satisfaction and quality goals. The successful candidate will be responsible for scheduling/planning, attending pre-construction meetings, quality control, inventory and closing out assigned projects. To be effective in this position, the incumbent must work well with and communicate with Engineering and other departments, internal and external customers, builders, developers, joint trench partners, electricians, claims, etc. This job will require an alternate work schedule to accomplish the listed responsibilities. This person will have to work closely with the Joint Trench partners and the Power Services Organization. The DC Coordinator will work closely with region leadership to support their storm restoration plans.

Georgia Power is currently seeking experienced Journeyman Lineman and Troublemen candidates in the Albany, Georgia.

Candidate must live within a reasonable commuting distance of the assignment location in order to meet "call out" requirements. If a candidate does not currently live within this area, candidate must be willing to immediately relocate to meet this requirement.

  • Candidate must be available and accessible in times of emergency which could include evenings, weekends and holidays.

  • Candidate must be available and accessible at least 50% of time for emergency "call-out".

  • Candidate must be available for travel outside the state to support storm emergencies as needed.

JOB SUMMARY

  • Job Duties include (but not limited to):

  • Pole Climbing (up to 60 feet).

  • Working in an overhead position while on the pole.

  • Pulling and splicing wires.

  • Installing Electrical Service (pole to pole OR pole to service point).

  • Operate/Drive Company Trucks including Bucket Trucks.

  • Operate heavy equipment (Backhoe or similar equipment).

  • Work in adverse conditions outdoors - day and night hours.

  • Operate Electrical system - Transmission, Substation and Distribution Switching

  • Writing Switching Orders

Note: This is a position covered by a collective bargaining agreement between Georgia Power and IBEW Local 84 and is governed by this agreement. Union membership is optional. The starting salary for a lineman is $44.41. Troublemen is $46.17. Troublemen (g) is $48.55 (non-negotiable and level of experience does not apply) and this pay is governed by this agreement which includes an increase every six months assuming satisfactory performance, until you max out in your job classification and a negotiated general increase every July.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Job Experience and Education

  • Experience as a Journeyman Lineman with a minimum of 5 years' experience in the electric utility industry and 3 years of Journeyman Lineman experience working with voltages above 600 volts.

  • Overhead distribution experience (up to 25Kv) required.

  • Underground distribution experience (up to 25Kv) preferred.

  • Previous experience working on the Georgia Power system highly preferred.

  • Leadership experience preferred.

  • Must demonstrate skills, knowledge, and ability by successfully completing the company's pre-employment New Journeyman Evaluation will be required.

  • Familiar with work involving energized conductors required.

  • Construction and maintenance line work is desirable.

  • Familiar with heavy equipment directly related to line work skill sets.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Basic mechanical aptitude.

  • Knowledge of hand tools.

  • Experience using hydraulic and battery tools.

  • Previous experience with material handling bucket trucks.

  • Knowledge of when and how to apply proper cover-up in energized situations.

  • Proficient climber up to 60 feet.

  • Knowledge of circuit protection.

  • Ability to take instructions, directions and translate into actions.

  • Familiar with industry standard safe work practices.

  • Pre-employment testing may be required depending on level of related work experience.

JOB SUMMARY:

This position will be required to handle all of the day-to-day engineering work activities in an assigned area. Responsibilities include service design, estimating, and coordinating construction for multiple overhead and underground residential, new business and other construction projects. Candidate must provide superior customer service and be able to prepare and schedule construction of jobs to meet committed service dates. Candidate will write and execute switching orders to effectively maintain, operate, and assist in the distribution planning of the system for reliability. In addition, the candidate will be responsible for processing all documentation in accordance with Compliance requirements. Other duties will include handling customer inquiries (voltage complaints, claims, etc.) and assisting with Distribution compliance and asset management programs. Candidate will also participate in the on-call trouble supervision rotation and must be available after business hours for local, out-of-town, and out-of-state trouble and storm restoration.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience for an Engineer or Engineering Associate position:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering (From ABET Accredited School) OR

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology OR

  • Bachelor's Degree in Math or Science OR

  • Professional Engineer's License (PE) in lieu of the above bachelor's degree

  • Previous Distribution Engineering Experience is a plus

  • Distribution and or related Engineering experience with a power utility company is a plus

Education and Experience for an Engineer Representative position:

  • A two-year technical degree, OR four-year degree in a non-technical field, OR EUT Certificate with two years of utility experience is preferred but not required.

  • Previous Distribution Engineering Experience is a plus

  • Distribution and or related Engineering experience with a power utility company is a plus

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Proficient with MS office products and other related engineering Software systems highly desired.

  • Strong Technical Engineering Skills and understanding of Power Systems are highly desired

  • Candidate should possess knowledge of general engineering and construction principles.

  • Knowledge of electrical system operations, distribution systems, underground and overhead construction practices.

  • Prior experience in writing and executing switching orders preferred.

  • Working knowledge of ARMS, JETS/JETS Scheduling, Designer/GIS, CSS, Socket, DistView, TCMS Web, NJUNS, EDEN, and DisIntel preferred.

  • Knowledge of the Franchise Manual, Distribution Bulletins, Engineering Handbook/Specifications, Distribution Operating Procedures, ARC Flash Requirements, Metering Blue Book, Consistency Manual and the Financial and Business goals preferred.

  • Ability to prioritize and organize work to manage multiple projects and meet strict deadlines.

  • Excellent project management skills that lead to desired results.

  • Ability to work with customers and others as a team member.

  • Must be able to effectively communicate and build positive relationships with customers, engineers, customer service, sales, corporate partners and line crew personnel.

  • Effective oral and written communication skills.

  • Good Attitude and Ability to provide excellent customer service both internally and externally

  • Working knowledge of NESC.

  • Must have valid driver's license.

Job Summary:

Responsibilities include overseeing, communicating, and assisting with the implementation of remediation, emergency response, and waste related environmental programs, guidelines, and compliance strategies for company business units and facilities. This position has direct responsibility and oversight for manifesting, shipping and disposal of all waste generated through the spill response and substation remediation process. This position also provides feedback to contractor foreman on effectiveness of the implementation of contractual obligations. Position expected to interface with regulatory inspectors and the public as encountered during field activities.

Specifically, this position has direct oversight for contractors responsible for sample media collection affiliated with emergency spill response and substation remediation. Additional responsibilities include contract reviews, prepares reports, and communicates findings with clients, as well as training for applicable business units and assistance with Storm Emergency Restoration Preparation (SERP).

This position may be filled as an analyst I, II or Sr. depending on educational background, experience, and qualifications. The position can be located in either Atlanta, GA or Forest Park, Ga.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Familiarity with and/or ability to learn and interpret environmental regulations/requirements and company policies including Georgia Solid Waste Management, Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), Georgia Hazardous Waste Management Act, Substation Sampling and Analysis Plan, and Emergency Spill Response

  • Manage contractors for the implementation of emergency spill response

  • Manage contractors for the implementation of substation remediation and retirement projects

  • Assist with substation intrusive sampling field activities

  • Manage network underground vault sampling and retirement program

  • Provide project schedules and direct invoice reconciliations

  • Maintain appropriate spill response supplies and equipment to assure timely response

  • Develop partnerships with all levels of business unit to ensure compliance with spill response and substation remediation

  • Provide accurate recording and reporting of technical and administrative data

  • Support the Company's environmental policies in all areas, including environmental stewardship initiatives.

Job Requirements:

  • Familiar with applicable environmental laws and regulations specifically related work experience in substations, spill clean-up, PCB and asbestos management preferred.

  • Basic knowledge of relevant state and federal environmental regulations, direct experience working with substation sampling, emergency response clean-up, and soil remediation.

  • Ability to synthesize technical information and communicate in a manner suitable for technical and non-technical personnel.

  • Ability to work with limited supervision and maintain a flexible schedule which may include non-traditional hours and travel.

  • Judgment skills necessary to make decisions based on procedural review with management.

  • Project and contract management including management of 3 rd party services providers

  • Familiar with GIS Mapping

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • BS or BA degree in a science related field preferred (i.e. geology, chemistry, environmental science, etc).

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • 3 to 5 years' experience in one or more of the following areas is preferred: environmental compliance, contractor oversight, substation sampling and remediation

  • Experience in working with interdisciplinary teams.
