Description
Embedded Product Analytics uses quantitative methods to solve problems for internal and external Caterpillar customers by using data from sensors, on-board models, control algorithms, internal quality systems, and external quality systems. This is the third career level in engineering and represents a shift from learning and assisting to fully contributing to assignments that are broader, more complex, and challenging in nature.
The Analytics, Virtual Sensors and Controls Group develops onboard control algorithms to manage the storage and consumption of power (electrical, hydraulic and engine generated) of complex systems of Cat equipment and engines. Algorithms are typically used in to determine the optimum power distribution in battery hybrid machines, multiple engine systems and mixed electric and combustion powered systems. Our group works as a key technology provider to a wide variety of machine and engine product groups within Cat. Additionally, we develop algorithms to predict component failure over longer time scales (hours-weeks-months) to optimize machine maintenance, prevent unscheduled downtime and minimize customer cost. All of this is achieved by analyzing detailed equipment time series data, understanding the physical systems involved and developing cutting edge models using a combination of physics and data science methods. Typically, models are developed in Python, C/C++ or Matlab/Simulink, depending on application needs, and ultimately deployed either in cloud applications or on equipment ECM's at the edge.
Job Duties
For Caterpillar, digital means using technology to extract data from our machines and engines and transform it into valuable recommendations or -insights,- to help customers make better, more informed decisions and help Caterpillar make robust products with the lowest total ownership cost. Our products generate and process large amounts of data from sensors, on-board models, and control algorithms in real-time creating real-world machine usage information. Additionally, data is generated through numerous quality systems to provide information about internal and external quality defects and external failures. This data represents a rich body of machine information that is highly useful for product development and product improvement once mined, aggregated, and analyzed for actionable insight using embedded product analytics.
The key role of this engineering position is to move from learning and assisting others to fully contributing. At this level, engineers begin partnering with and providing technical guidance within and between units and other teams. Projects typically range from three months to two years. Ability to gather relevant information, compare data, identify relationships, and predict and manage failures is critical. Challenges include challenging the status quo and championing new initiatives, collaborating with team members and other teams, and keeping abreast of advancing technology. Decisions may affect the work group or project team, suppliers, multiple units, and both internal and external customers, and these decisions have significant impact on warranty, total cost of non-quality, customer perception, costs, sales, and the leveraging of technology.
This position is responsible for helping a team to design appropriate analytical models for his or her functional area; helping experts to understand, mine, and clean the data used in that functional area; assisting the project leader in understanding the challenges facing a functional area; and in deploying or implementing the solutions that the team develops. Significant data analysis and systems analysis efforts and skills are needed to help understand complex issues from product data and to examine information to improve overall performance.
Individuals may have multiple assignments during their tenure as an Embedded Product Analytics Engineer 3. Assignments may require the engineer to review the work of other support personnel, provide technical advice to individuals at various levels in the organization and work with another unit or team. Assignments will become more complex and require the engineer to assume a significant role, either as an individual contributor or as part of a project team, with increasing emphasis on analyzing, identifying, and applying engineering techniques to solve problems and make recommendations.
Key areas of responsibility encountered in this role may include any or all of the following: perform needs analysis and initiate ideas; evaluate new products, processes, or systems; communicate results to customers, suppliers, team members, and other business units; contribute to the design of new products and processes; perform product and process maintenance; collaborate with and support other engineers, managers, marketing personnel, customers and suppliers, maintain technical currency, and represent the company externally.
Engineers must manage their own development, continuously learning through experience and staying abreast of emerging technologies such as edge computing, operating system level virtualization, machine learning, Internet of Things, and online analytical processing. Key learning should be rounded out during this tenure, including knowledge of Caterpillar and competitive product performance and application, understanding of customers' needs, working knowledge of key processes, data analysis, and data extraction skills. Project management skills are being honed at this level.
Basic Qualifications
Requires a Bachelor's degree in an accredited Engineering, Computer Science, or Materials Science curriculum plus 3-7 years of experience or a Master's degree in an Engineering, Computer Science, or Materials Science curriculum plus 2-6 years of experience or a doctorate degree in engineering.
Top Candidates will also have
Also requires excellent analytical skills. Incumbents have exhibited ability to work on increasingly more complex assignments, either through on-the-job assignments or through pursuit of the advanced degree. Experience working with a different unit or working with different products, processes, or systems is desirable. Must have ability to communicate effectively with team members and others in the work group, as well employees in other units, customers, and suppliers. Highly desirable skills would include familiarity with the Oil and Gas Industry, experience with diesel, gas or other combustion engines, the ability to read and develop Python code, the ability to read and develop Matlab/Simulink models, embedded or cloud computing programming experience, familiarity with machine and engine data protocols used by Caterpillar, and familiarity with SC2/Time Series data analysis methods.
