The Real Estate Analytics & Data Science Summer Associate will work to complete an analysis of the Navy Federal mortgage lending operation in terms of developing an inputs/outputs matrix for simulating the impacts of staffing, technology, or process changes on the mortgage origination process. The proposed project will involve simplifying the mortgage origination process, including cross-organizational dependencies, into a matrix of key input variables that impact three key outcomes: member satisfaction scores, origination volume, and cycle time.
The Mortgage Lending team currently utilizes a distributed method for evaluating the impacts of changes to various parts of the operation and how these changes will impact member satisfaction, cycle time, and booked volume. The Summer Associate will develop a streamlined framework that will give all interested parties (Field Mortgage, Processing, Underwriting, and Closing) a singular tool to estimate how various operational changes impact the business end to end. The project objective will be to obtain an impartial look at the current reporting capabilities and enhance them by building an interactive tool, allowing leadership to drive production and improve efficiency and quality at all levels.
The Summer Associate Program is a 12-week internship program beginning in May 2024 and ending in August 2024. Students will work on impactful projects and meaningful work during their internship. To qualify for this position, applicants must be currently pursuing a degree from an accredited college or university and have an anticipated graduation date of December 2024 or later.
Responsibilities
Research and analyze the Real Estate Lending department operations, structure, and organization
Complete a business structure analysis of Navy Federal mortgage lending, specifically in the context of analyzing how our current structure drives, inhibits, or enhances the mortgage lending process
Analyze the department's current state to discover opportunities for increasing efficiency and finding areas to improve
Work directly with project leads to understand requirements and propose key analytics solutions to drive effective decision-making and influence business objectives
Present findings and recommendations to stakeholders across the credit union, including executive level management
The proposed project will consist of a machine learning model to drive originations for Real Estate
Qualifications
Currently pursuing a graduate degree in Applied Analytics, Business Analytics, Data Science, or other related degree
Machine Learning, Data Analytics, and Data Visualization experience
Experience with Python, Pyspark, or R
Knowledge of cloud technologies (Databricks, Microsoft Azure)
Experience with SQL
Experience with data visualization (PowerBI, Tableau)
Excellent communication and presentation skills
Experience working with ambiguous problems

Overview
The Fraud Data & Reporting (FDR) team provides actionable intelligence that guides Navy Federal's fraud mitigation efforts, accomplished through dashboards, reporting, and analysis. Our intelligence supports data driven decision-making for Security Division leadership and an efficient Fraud Operations workforce. FDR collaborates with partners within Security and throughout the enterprise, such as membership and contact center, in our efforts to fight fraud and protect our members. The Summer Associate will be an integral member of our fraud fighting team and will synthesize cloud, vendor, and on-prem data to produce strategic dashboards that deliver actionable insights into fraud trends.
Potential projects include:
Propose and implement data driven solutions to Fraud Operations leadership that optimize workforce productivity
Partner with the Fraud Detection team to develop a fraud trend dashboard that identifies fraud vulnerabilities and supports countermeasure development
Identify key drivers of fraud using complex statistical analysis that can be used to forecast fraud losses and fraud operations workforce requirements

The Summer Associate Intern will report to leadership at our Vienna, VA or Pensacola, FL campus. Responsibilities will include analyzing business needs to develop and implement solutions in both systems and processes to provide enhanced capabilities. Areas of focus will include involvement in cross-organizational task groups concerning new systems or products as well as developing, recommending, and documenting enhancements to workflows to streamline processes. It will be essential for the team member in this position be a quick learner with analytical thinking skills to understand the evolving product strategy and competitive landscape to be able to suggest product, system, and/or process enhancements to propel the strategic vision forward.
This role will be a member of the Strategic and Operational Analysis (SOA) group - a diverse group of analysts looking to enable and support members overall financial well-being. The SOA team has a wealth of expertise in Project and Program Management, Business Intelligence, Workforce Analytics, Product Strategy, Business Systems, and Process Improvement. We apply these skills daily as we represent Savings Products on initiatives, plan and execute on strategy, and support executive leadership in the execution of the strategic direction and roadmap. A resourceful, curious problem solver is highly desired.

Overview
The Collections Reporting & Analytics team supports the Data and Analytics needs of our business partners for all lending products across Navy Federal. This unique team support a large array of diverse data sets and challenges to provide insights that can help support our membership in difficult times.
The Summer Associate will work with our vast data landscape to help analyze legacy reporting and identify optimization opportunities for current analytics as well identify gaps and create recommendations for new insights to take our analytics to the next level for the business. Overview

The Employee Productivity and Collaboration Services team ensures that Navy Federal Credit Union has the tools they need to be productive and collaborate any place, any time, anywhere. Overview
The Cyber Advanced Analysis Team (CAAT) in Navy Federal's Information Security Division's Automation and Special Projects group identifies, tracks and mitigates cyber threats to Navy Federal Credit Union Members. Overview
Business Fraud & Risk (BFR) focuses on Fraud Mitigation and Risk related to all Business Accounts, Applications, and Business Membership Issues. The Real Estate Lending (REL) Technology Services team is responsible for delivering secure, scalable, and channel agnostic member-centric back-end integration capabilities and support Real Estate Lending applications, accelerating the digital transformation, and empowering teams to innovate and deliver products and services through collaboration. The REL Technology Product Owner (TPO) leads three verticals with 40+ employees and consultants.
